Battle of the Bands #4: Creep

I'm back for my forth installment of Battle of the Bands. This time I will try to do a better job of audio quality. Anyway here is how it works:

Listen to the song clips in the blog post. In the comment section vote for the one you like the best. Feel free to explain why you voted the way you did. The battles take place on the first and 15th and winners will be announced on the 7th and 21st. I will normally post the winner in the comments. Of course have fun and enjoy!

If you are still looking for more musical fun after you vote, you can check out these sites for more battles:

Please visit them and vote! I visited them all but I was very bad at the voting last round. My apologies my three ring circus called life had me very busy away from the blog world.

Today's song is "Creep" by Radiohead. I wanted to put Prince's version on here but any live songs of him last about 30 seconds on youtube which is a shame. Anyway today I will pit Tori Amos against Moby with the song. Here is Tori Amos doing it live a couple of weeks ago..

Here is Moby's cover of "Creep."

Not in the competition but for a point of reference. Here is Radiohead performing the song...

Enjoy, vote, comment, and have fun! Thanks for stopping in and I will have a new post soon!

I had never heard any version of this before tonight, and it's not the type of music I listen to regularly.

While Tori Amos is much better-looking than Moby, her performance on this song was at best tedious and at worst annoying. It was all I could do not to turn it off mid-performance. I was able to listen to Moby's all the way thru, and thought his voice and his style was better-suited to the song. So, his version wins this round.

Arlee wanted me to tell you that I've just started with BOTB, and I'd like to invite you to stop by and see what I have in store.

I think Radio Head is who I first heard this song by. don't think I knew the song name though. They are hard to top.

But between Tori and Moby, hands down Moby.

I like some of Tori Amos's stuff: The studio version of "God" with its funky beat and her ethereal harmonies and all those weird and wonderful guitar snippets is a personal favorite.

But in this bout, I definitely go with Moby.

This comment is going to be full of bias in terms of personal preference... I just don't care for A WHOLE BUNCH of live performance songs. There are exceptions to this, but neither one of these meets them. I love this song and I don't like either of these versions overly much.

I would have REALLY liked the Tori Amos version if she had decided to record it in the studio (I think) because I really liked it right up to the point that she went insane on the piano and kept hitting the same chord, like a record finding a scratch. Ironically, the audience clapped like crazy after that bit, so maybe it was awesome live and awful any other time. I like the fact that she took the song and fitted it to her personal style with just the keyboard.

Near as I can tell Moby didn't change up the song at all. And, overall, the performance was mediocre. I can't give the vote to them on a mediocre performance. Technically, not a darn thing wrong with it.

So, even though Tori goes from brilliant to horrendous (in that one place) at least she had the makings of brilliant at SOME point. Chalk one for Tori.

I'll agree with John that the Tori Amos version was indeed "tedious" - a very good word choice to describe it.

Unlike John, however, I did NOT manage to make it all the way through Tori's version. I shut it off with one minute yet to go. I'd heard enough, didn't needs to hear no more of her caterwauling.

Put me down as another vote for MOBY.

I never been able to get into Tori Amos' music much. It always strikes me as overly pretentious and artsy, thus tedious as has been mentioned. Nix Tori for me on this song.

Moby is far better and he has some strings backing him and that's cool.

My vote for Moby.

I was not familiar with this song, but I may have heard the original by Radiohead and if I could vote for them I would.

I found Tori Amos to be quite annoying (I guess that's close to tedious) and did not make it all the way through her version. Moby on the other hand was not quite Radiohead, but way better than Tori.

Chalk up another vote for Moby.

Ever since I saw the promotional sign for Little Earthquakes, I have been a Tori Amos fan, even though she's certainly beaten her own path over those two and a half decades.

But it is hard to disagree with the crowd here, even though quite often I find her voice to have a haunting quality to it-her voice better suits her own material. If you've never heard the "Earthquakes" record, you ought to try it out.

So while I am not a Moby fan, since I can't vote for Radiohead, Moby's gonna get the nod.
