2016 Wanee Festival Lineup Part 3: An Allman Connection

Wanee Music Festival is set for April 14, 15 and 16 of 2016. It will be the second Wanee Festival without The Allman Brother Band but this festival has a fantastic lineup. This year I will be doing them as a series. It look like it might be a six part series but that could change. This is part three of that series you can read part one here and part two here. As I mentioned before this is the second festival without the Allman Brothers Band. However there are still some bands with Allman Brothers Band connections.

Devon Allman

Above is a picture of Devon Allman performing at the 2011 Wanee Festival. Devon is Gregg Allman's son and is a suburb musician in his own right. Devon was a founder of Honeytribe and The Royal Southern Brotherhood. Currently he is touring in support of a solo album.

Oteil and Friends

Oteil Burbridge was the bassist for The Allman Brothers Band for over 17 years, a founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit and most recently part of The Dead & Company Band. The two-time Grammy Award winning bassists will be performing at Wanee with his friends.

Jaimoe was a drummer and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. He will be at Wanee behind his kit leading his jazz influenced band..

The Allman Brothers End of Era

Well tonight was the last show by The Allman Brothers Band. I shared the news during the A to Z Challenge in this post. Also the post has more music!

How do you celebrate an ending? By looking back and celebrating what is now a legacy.

The band had "Dreams"even back in 1969..

Now the band is going "Into the Mystic" covering Van Morrison on one of their final shows 10/25/2014...

Even now it is hard to find a band that has a better guitar attack than Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. Below is "Blue Sky" performed in Germany in 1991.

I am hoping I am finding different songs to say farewell.

A to Z Challenge: A is for Allman Brothers

The Allman Brothers Band have announced they are calling it quits after this year. I guess the road does not go on for ever for the band. Then again perhaps maybe forever has reached its end.

With Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks  announcing they were leaving the band, I can see why they would call it a career..

Above was a clip of Warren and Derek performing "Old Friend."  Okay, I'll put an Allman Brothers song or two in this blog. I'll start out with one of my favorites..

Did I get a chance to see The Allman Brothers Band live? Yes I was lucky enough to see them on back to back nights at The Wanee Festival in 2011..

The last year I blogged about Bob Weir it was with concern to his health. Today I write to celebrate his 66th birthday. The yen and yang of blogging or just the continuity of a long, strange trip.The longtime Grateful Dead guitarist is a singer, songwriter, and a talented musician. As we celebrate we will look back at his career.

I couldn't pass this up. Warren Haynes was mind blowing this summer paying tribute to Jerry Garcia. If you missed that you can read my review here. Here Warren Haynes trades licks with Bob Weir on the classic "I Know You Rider."

Happy Birthday Jerry Garcia

Jerry Garcia would have been 71 years old today. The ever changing music world misses him. Jerry being gone is more than just one must see concert erased from the calender. Yes their is Furthur, The Dead, Phil Lesh and Friends but they all miss one person and they are not the same without Jerry Garcia.

Warren Haynes and the NSO Tribute to Jerry Garcia at Wolf Trap

You can read my review of the show here. However a truer testimony might have been my six year old daughters reaction to the show as my guest. Her favorite musical artists are Katy Perry, Justin Beiber, Miley Cyrus, and Taylor Swift. She volunteered to go with me and even dressed the part..



Any way we took our seats and as we were waiting for the show to start she started getting crabby. The typical humid summer evening weather wasn't helping. She was suddenly thirsty and hungry. Oh, no the complaining had begun Then something magical happened the band came out and together with the National Symphony Orchestra they started to play music. The smile came to her face and she was happy again. When the grown ups started to dance so did my daughter. When they started playing with balloons she wanted one. Some how the balloons avoided us and my daughter didn't take away the grown ups play toys.By intermission her I wants went from food and water to souvenirs. By the end of the show she wanted to meet  Warren Haynes and get his autograph. I was honest and told her I would like to do that too!

2012 Wanee Festival Lineup

The 2012 Wanee Festival Lineup has been announced and it is another great one! Especially if you like the Grateful Dead.

You knew the Allman Brothers were going to play and they are scheduled to play to nights. Hey it is pretty much their festival..

Here are the Allman Brothers performing at last years festival..

The Furthur Band will also be playing two nights at Wannee...Here the band plays All Along the Watchtower..

It is going to be a festival full of guitar greats as well. Warren Haynes will be performing with Gov't Mule..

Tedeschi Trucks Band will also playing. Derek Trucks will once again be one of the hardest working guitarists at the festival. Here is that band performing at Wanee in 2011.

Jaimoe's Jasssz Band will also be returning to Wanee in 2012.
Blues legend Buddy Guy will be performing. He is considered one of the best ever and influenced Jimi Hendrix.

Bruce Hornsby, who has sat in numerous times with the Grateful Dead. and has had quite a successful musical career will also be performing.

Mickey Hart will bring his band to the festival. He was the drummer for the Grateful Dead.
Hot Tuna Electric will be performing. Hot Tuna do I really have to say more...

Ray Manzarek will be performing with the Roy Rogers Band. Ray played for a legendary band called The Doors..

Leftover Salmon will be performing.
The North Mississippi Allstars will be performing. They had an impressive visit at Wanee in 2011.

Triggger Hippy sounds like a cool band featuring Joan Osborne, Jackie Green, Steve Gorman, Audley Freed,  and Nick Govrik.

Other bands include:
Soja, Conspirator, Eoto

Along with some returning bands from last year:
Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Particle, and as I had mentioned in my previous post Devon Allmans Honeytribe.

Zach Deputy and The Booby Lee Rodgers Trio will be performing.

Matt Schofield one of the best up and coming blues guitarists will be performing. Don't miss his set.

Big Sams Funky Nation is a fun band from New Orleans as is Bonerama a couple funky horn bands to get you dancing.
