2016 Wanee Festival Lineup Part 3: An Allman Connection

Wanee Music Festival is set for April 14, 15 and 16 of 2016. It will be the second Wanee Festival without The Allman Brother Band but this festival has a fantastic lineup. This year I will be doing them as a series. It look like it might be a six part series but that could change. This is part three of that series you can read part one here and part two here. As I mentioned before this is the second festival without the Allman Brothers Band. However there are still some bands with Allman Brothers Band connections.

Devon Allman

Above is a picture of Devon Allman performing at the 2011 Wanee Festival. Devon is Gregg Allman's son and is a suburb musician in his own right. Devon was a founder of Honeytribe and The Royal Southern Brotherhood. Currently he is touring in support of a solo album.

Below is "Ragged and Dirty"...

Oteil and Friends

Oteil Burbridge was the bassist for The Allman Brothers Band for over 17 years, a founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit and most recently part of The Dead & Company Band. The two-time Grammy Award winning bassists will be performing at Wanee with his friends.

Below is Oteil with the Peacemakers...

JAIMOE'S JASSSZ BAND

Jaimoe was a drummer and founding member of the Allman Brothers Band. He will be at Wanee behind his kit leading his jazz influenced band..

"Can't Loose What You Never Had"

Two Servings of Warren Haynes

Warren Haynes served as a guitarist in the Allman Brothers Band for several years. He will be performing solo and with his group Gov't Mule

Warren Haynes with "Coal Tattoo"

Gov't Mule "Banks of the Deep End"

Gregg Allman

Greg Allman is an Allman Brother, a founding member, a keyboardist/organ master, and vocalist. Yes he is playing as his own band but there will be plenty of surprises at Wanee.

"Come and Go Blues"

Thanks for visiting please come back soon! I will be back with a new post soon.

Heartsoulblood The Latest from Royal Southern Brotherhood

The Royal Southern Brotherhood are back with  their second studio release Heartsoulblood.

I raved about the album in my review here. I am adding extras here in my blog like the album teaser.
Below they perform "Rock and Roll" from the album live. (No it is not the Led Zeppelin song.)

Of course with a band made up of Devon Allman, Mike Zito, Cyril Neville, Yonrico Scott and Charlie Wooten your expectations would be high. I think they delivered well!

The above song was from their first album. Read my review, listen, enjoy and let me know what you think!

A to Z: Royal Southern Brotherhood

Okay, I have followed the music of Devon Allman since I first heard him with his, then band Honeytribe, at the Wanee Festival in 2011. Since then he has toured with Honeytribe and currently has a brand new solo album. However, I want to talk about his other band that released their debut in 2012, called The Royal Southern Brotherhood which by the way is on tour.

Devon Allman is the son of Greg Allman from The Allman Brothers Band. I wouldn't call him the Prince of Southern Jam music based on his bloodlines. Devon, is a working class type musician who is one of the hardest working musicians out there. Check out his bands, tour dates, and productivity. Any way add St. Louis guitarist in Mike Zito to fill in the guitars.

Zito has recorded his own solo albums, in 2010 he won the Blues Music Award for song of the year for his song "Pearl River." He has also played with Ana Popovic and guested with many others.

The band also features Grammy Award winning percussionist/vocalist Cyril Neville. Like Devon, Cyrill has a musical bloodline. Cyril was a member of The Meters, The Neville Brothers, and The Voices of Wetlands All-Star Band.

On drums the band features Yonrico Scott who used to play for Derek Trucks. Charlie Wooton rounds up the band on bass. But more importantly, than who is in the band what does this band sound like?

Let me share with you what The Royal Southern Brotherhood sounds like...

Here is a teaser about their album...

Their first video...

Here they are live covering the Rolling Stones..

Give them a listen you will be glad you did. They set a record this weekend at Wanee Festival 2012 with over 10,000 people watching them on the smaller Mushroom State. They also had some special guests like Greg Allman, Tab Benoit, and Artimus Pyle join them. Another reason to see them you never know who might join them. Well I hope you enjoy and I will be back with a new post soon!

Mid Week Blues

I write about the blues in the washington D.C. area and farther out as well. The area has been a blues Mecca recently with shows by B.B. King, Joe Bonamassa, Bobby "Blue" Bland ad more. This week is no exception Buddy Guy was honored at the Kennedy Center on Sunday. You can read my preview on that along with David Letterman, Led Zeppelin and more here.

However, the bllues continues with the great Robert Cray performing tonight at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. You can read my preview article here. He has played with greats like John Lee Hooker and Eric Clapton. Here are some videos to help refresh your memory...

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark...

Here he is with Clapton...

Daryl Davis is opening...

The blues don't stop there. On Wednesday night Devon Allman performs at the State Theatre in Falls Church. You can read my preview here. He has great a sound I have seen him twice with Honeytribe once at the Wanee Festivsal and once at the Western Maryland Blues Fest. This will be a bit different since he will be promoting a solo album.

Here he does one of his Dad's songs...

Here he does one of his Honeytribe songs..

Check out the album teaser on the preview article for more fun. I'll be back soon with a new post.

Bruce Hornsby, who has sat in numerous times with the Grateful Dead. and has had quite a successful musical career will also be performing.

Mickey Hart will bring his band to the festival. He was the drummer for the Grateful Dead.

Along with some returning bands from last year:
Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, Particle, and as I had mentioned in my previous post Devon Allmans Honeytribe.

Devon..

Zach Deputy and The Booby Lee Rodgers Trio will be performing.

Matt Schofield one of the best up and coming blues guitarists will be performing. Don't miss his set.

Big Sams Funky Nation is a fun band from New Orleans as is Bonerama a couple funky horn bands to get you dancing.

Wanee Festival to Release 2012 Lineup Monday

Wanee Festival made this announcement on Facebook "Wanee 2012 lineup announcement this Monday at 10am! Tickets on sale Friday January 20 at 10am!"

If you love music with a leaning towards jam bands you will not be disappointed with the lineup. I went last year and I had a blast! I'm pretty sure The Allman Brothers Band will be doing a set or two. I had put them as one of my top 10 Southern Rock groups of all time and mentioned them as a jam band as well. As well as Devon Allman who is one of my favorite artists of 2011.

Here is a review of the 2011 Wanee Music Festival I wrote last year. Of course last year they had Robert Plant and his Band of Joy here is a review of their set. This song and performance by Robert Plant and his Band of Joy has to be one of the musical highlights of my life..

Thankfully some one captured it on youtube!

I am excited to find out who will be in the 2012 lineup! Here are the Allman Brothers captured from last year with Blues legend Taj Mahal..

Plus the festival is put together in a beautiful park that even inspired me to write a poem.
Here is a picture of Robert Plant on stage at Wanee 2011, the girl is Patty Griffin and Darrell Scott on mandolin.
Here is Devon Allman..

and here is the river..

Z to A: Devon Allman's Honeytribe

Devon Allman and his band Honeytribe will be playing the Western Maryland Blues Festival next Saturday at 1PM. If you like Blues, Southern Rock, and Jam Rock then this band is not one to miss. I did catch the band down at Wanee and they put on a heck of a show.
