Battle of the Bands #3: A Tribute to Jerry Garcia Jimmy Buffett Vs Warren Haynes

I'm back for another Battle of Bands, this will be my third one. This time around I will be honoring Jerry Garcia who was born in August and died in August.

Anyway here is how it works:

Listen to the song clips in the blog post. In the comment section vote for the one you like the best. Feel free to explain why you voted the way you did. The battles take place on the first and 15th and winners will be announced on the 7th and 21st. I will normally post the winner in the comments. Of course have fun and enjoy!

If you are still looking for more musical fun after you vote, you can check out these sites for more battles:

         Your Daily Dose

         DiscConnected
           Tossing It Out
STMcC Presents "Battle of the Bands"
           A Writer's Life In Progress
           Curious as a Cathy
The list of blogs participating is growing! Which is a great thing, a lot of diverse music.

If you have one and I missed it let me know in the comments. If you just started your battle let me know in the comments.

The Grateful Dead had legions of fans called Deadheads and Jimmy Buffett has legions of fans called Parrot Heads. Fact is Jimmy Buffett liked the Grateful Dead as well. Here he covers "Scarlet Begonias."

Warren Haynes and his version of "Scarlet Begonias" with some symphonic help. I apologize I couldn't find a pro shot video.

Please vote in the comments and enjoy!

Well you got one I was planning on, but I would have put Jimmy against Jerry. I was fortunate enough to have seen Jerry with The Dead at Red Rocks in Morrison, CO (best concert venue ever). A clear night, a little chemical enhancement, lightening flashing out over the plains,a date with a guy who was one of my good friends - it doesn't get much better than that.

I saw Jimmy in Vegas years later. another great party. Not quite the same great venue, but Jimmy makes up for it no matter where he plays.

Warren Hayes version here is probably dulled by the fact that it's live and not the best quality, but all the same in this contest I would have to vote Jimmy hands down, BUT in the end if that was a choice it would be Jerry and The Dead for sure.

I may not be voting in the true spirit of the contest, as the audio quality of the Hayens version is not stellar....

But Warren Haynes versus Jimmy Buffet is not contest at all for me.

Jimmy can stick to his cheeseburgers in paradise...Warren can play that axe!

To be honest, I have never been a Grateful Dead fan nor a Jimmy Buffett fan. Buffett has always come across to me as if he's just "trying too hard to play the Party Animal type". (I do like the song 'Margaritaville', but then part of that is probably due to the fact that I also like Margaritas.)

I have to agree with FarAwayEyes (above) that the Warren Hayes version is hurt by the poor sound quality of the recording. And from what I could make out, the Haynes version didn't really sound all that different from the Jimmy Buffett version, arrangement and tempo-wise.

Therefore, I will likewise vote for the Jimmy Buffett version, if for no other reason than the cleaner sound.

Hey -- I didn't know you were a fellow Deadhead! Cool!!!

Also -- I'm back into the BOTB as a returning participant, so you can include my blog in your list, also (it's the least you could do -- I included YOURS, lol!) I've contemplated a "Dark Star" BOTB battle between the Live Dead version and one done by Henry Kaiser which melds into "The Other One," but I doubt if I could get many of our voters to sit through 30-40 minutes of music to make a BOTB choice, lol.

Personally, one of my favorite covers of this tune is the one done by Sublime. So I'd take that over either version here.

But between your two, Warren absolutely gets the nod for guitar playing, by far. But the overall song orchestration seems off to me -- maybe it's the poor sound quality of the video.

End the end, I have to go with Jimmy Buffet for overall interpretation.

Can't beat Jimmy!

This battle seems unfair and stacked toward a Jimmy Buffett win. The quality in that second video was just so poor that there is no way I can vote for it. So, chalk up another vote for The Parrot.

Farawayeyes ertainly Jerry and the Dead would win.
Disconnected I agree Warren can play for sure. On this tribute concert his playing really shines!
Chris Fries I have you listed! But I'll try to make you stand out better next time. You are kin of hard to spot in the whiteness. Also I thought about putting the Sublime version.
Yes I wish I could have found a better quality for Warren!

I'm not familiar with this song at all. I've heard of Jimmy Buffett, but wouldn't call myself a fan. Warren Haynes? Was he with Grateful Dead? Either way, I have not heard of him and I'm definitely not a Grateful Dead fan. Buffet's version makes me think a lot of his hit song Margaritaville. At first, I thought that I didn't like either well enough to say one way or the other. I decided to visit YouTube to listen to other Warren Haynes videos of this song. That's when my decision became clear. I prefer Warren Haynes over Jimmy Buffett. Honestly, this surprised me. Anywho, I cast my vote for Haynes!

Joining the BOTB for the first time today, I hope you’ll decide to hop over to vote at <a href="http://curiousasacathy.com/2014/08/botb-last-kiss/“>#BOTB:The Last Kiss</a>
