I discovered an Australian band called Red Gum. They had a song called "I Was Only 19" and that is the song I am choosing for my Battle.

The Song: I Was Only 19

Contestant One: The Lancer Band (Australian Army)

Contestant Two: The Herd

One song, two different versions. One close to the original with a female vocalist and the second one done in hip-hop fashion. It is all up to you, just vote in the comments for the one you like the best!

The Herd version is not bad for what it is, but for my preference I go with The Lancer Band.

Such a heartwrenching song; beautiful! Love your theme idea, also.
When I read "The Herd" initially, Peter Frampton's first band from the 60s came to mind, but obviously not, if it's "Hip Hop". ☺ While this isn't my favourite genre, it wasn't bad. However, the Lancer Band vocalist really brought the emotion to the fore. Please give my vote to the Lancer Band.

This is a great song. Nice theme correlating with Veteran's Day. I had never heard the song before but I like it a lot! My vote is for the Lancer Band. The female vocals just seemed to bring more emotion to the song.

Hi, Mike!

I'm sure you recall the 80s hit "Nineteen" by Paul Hardcastle. Just saying...

I liked and appreciated this song and both worthy contestants in the battle. I vote for The Lancer Band for two reasons. I love the clarity and purity of the female lead vocal. At the same time, I did not like the second version quite as much because it was rendered in a rap style which did not evoke the same feelings as the first.

I would like to keep coming here and supporting your band battles, Mike. I respectfully ask you to be a good friend, follow my blog more closely and take part in my battles when they are presented. Thanks, Mike!

Too many 'dirty little wars' later, this is kind of a hard song to listen to. I must admit the more soulful and sentimental version by the Lancer Band is more to my liking. Give them my vote. Interesting BATTLE, Mike, with two very different versions.

Mike, what a nice thing to do to honor our vets through music. This is such a touching song is not? This was easy-peasy for me. I listened to the first contender I liked them, so I went on the contender 2 and after hearing the first few words I knew how to vote. I bet you know how I voted, too. I'm giving it to The Lancer Band. Interesting match up.

I feel silly because I am having trouble understanding the lyrics. Because of my failure to catch the accent, I vote for The Lancer Band because the young woman has such a beautiful voice. From what I can understand of the song, The Lancer Band sound is more appropriate for the lyrics.

Love,
Janie

No offense meant, MIKE, but I think I'm gonna pass on this one.

As FAE said, I'm sick 'n' tired of wars. People killing people for bankers and dictators and the Military-Industrial Complex. I've had enough of it. I don't even like War movies.

I'd still be willing to cast a vote anyway, but truthfully, I couldn't get into either one of these recordings (I did listen to some of each one). Sorry, Brother, but it's the first time I've ever passed on one of yer BOTBs. (You can get back at me someday, if you want.)

I'll return for your November 15th Battle, Friend!

For me, I think it's going to come down to genre. The second song wasn't a genre I'm particularly fond of so I'll give it to the Lancer Band.

I thought this was a very touching song. So many young men who went to VietNam were teenagers. Babies really. And they had no idea what was even going on. Just a non-stop terror ride.

The Lancer Band was no doubt easier on the ears. Her voice was beautiful in a stark contrast to the lyrics.

The Herd attempted to do something different with the song by making it hip hop in the beginning and more traditional in the end. I preferred the end, though I don't think the hip hop (aka talking) stuff was terrible. In fact, it wasn't bad at all. It just wasn't as good as the first one (which was stellar).

So, I'm not able to end what looks like a shut-out here. However, I do think this song was very moving and a good choice to honor Veterans Day. One more for The Lancer Band.

I think you'll find that if you listen to the words, the person who wrote the song wholeheartedly agrees with you about war.

+1 The Lancer Band

I thought I was going to like The Lancer Band's version better, but I got more a sense of what the song was about and understood the lyrics better with the Herd's version, so put me down for them. Good battle!

Considering Remembrance day is around the corner this is very fitting. A very sad and powerful song. I shall give it to The Lancer band because I prefer the soulful style of group and the girl's voice is perfect for this song. I could not understand the words as well from the 2nd bad and didn't care for the hip hop style
