Battle of the Bands: Where Have All the Flowers Gone

Spring is getting close. A time to thing about flowers. Like these roses..

I am going with a folk song today called "Where have all the Flowers Gone" written by the late Pete Seeger.

Here are the rules are simple I pick a song and present a couple of bands battling it out with the song. You pick the one you like best by casting your vote in the comments. Why you voted the way you did and other comments are always welcomed.

Please check out the other battles I defer to the master list found on this site STMcC Presents 'Battle of the Bands'.

Contestant One: Earth, Wind and Fire

Contestant Two: The Searchers

I look forward to your votes and I will be back soon with results!

As a group, I like Earth Wind & Fire, but this song didn't work for me. The Searchers version sounded more like I felt it should, and I liked their singing better.
Vote - Searchers.

Hmm. I like the Searchers' version best.

This song was popular when I was a kid. I didn't much like it then and it never grew on me very much. I'll blame Pete Seeger I guess.

Earth, Wind, and Fire started out with great promise for me but the vocals didn't get it for me. In fact not only the voices but the horns were piercing and a bit annoying to my ears.

I'm going with the more traditional sound of The Searchers. They are among my favorite groups of their era.

I saw Earth, Wind & Fire in concert but don't remember this song. It's okay but a bit slow for me. I'll go with the old "Seekers" version, today!

I did not expect either of these bands when I saw the song name. Anyway...

Voting for The Searchers. Pacing mainly. But the EWF vocalist was a bit too high-pitched for me. Not sure if that was Bailey or not. Liked him on "Easy Lover".

Earth, Wind, and Fire did an okay job of this, but The Searchers version sounded more "normal," for lack of a better word. They get my vote this week.

I thought I was going to like Earth Wind and Fire's version better but I didn't. Please give my vote to the Searchers. Their version took me back to a time gone by for sure...

Mike, great retro tune! You're in luck the flowers are returning again. :D I didn't care too much for Earth, Wind, and Fire's version. It was ok, but I really like The Searchers and they get my vote. I don't know, if it's them that I remember doing this song or another group for that era that sounds a lot like them. Oh well, nice job!

Although I'm a fan of Earth, Wind and Fire, this song doesn't suit their style, IMO. The Searchers captured the spirit of it much better, so they get my vote.

As much as I like Earth, Wind and Fire, they just didn't do it for me with this song. I feel that The Searchers felt more natural to me.

I actually like E W & F, but on this number not so much. It was too weird for even me. I'll go with the more traditional sound if The Searchers.

Hi, Mike!

I am familiar with the oft recorded folk song "Flowers" and my favorite version is the one by Johnny Rivers. In your contest I am giving the nod to The Searchers. I love the clean, crisp production on the recording and the Merseybeat group renders the song in a more appropriate folk pop style. I didn't like the EW&F version as much because the melody got lost and the overproduced arrangement did not lend itself well to the solemn nature of the song. Give my vote to The Searchers.

Thanks, Mike!

The Searchers all the way for me. They captured the spirit of the song. To be honest I had to turn off Earth, Wind and Fire because when they started to screech like a band saw my ears couldn't take it any more.

Good Battle, MIKE!
It's good because I had to play the Earth, Wind & Fire version a second time to make sure my vote was accurate.

I may be late, but I'm not TOO LATE to save you from a shutout. Yep, I'm going to be the "odd-man-out" here and vote for EARTH, WIND & FIRE.

I don't particularly care for falsetto singing, and I would have liked their version much more without it, but even with it, I liked it, and slightly better than the more standard version by The Searchers. There was some sort of melancholy element to the E,W&F version that appealed to me. It has that classic '70s Soul sound and it took me back to a time I miss.

Just call me "Mighty Mouse":

I'm so glad StMcC saved you from the dreaded shutout, because it wasn't gonna be me. I really didn't care much for EW&F. The Searchers all the way!

I'm going with The Searchers. Earth, Wind & Fire was much too mellow for me :)

Cool battle, Mike!
