I know The Rolling Stones aren't everyone's favorite. They are among my favorites and I am going back to them like they were a musical comfort food. Also the contestants I am using for his battle  have been in the news lately. I do like to infuse a bit of purpose or theme into my battles.

The Song  "Sympathy for the Devil"

Contestant One: Guns N' Roses

Rumors are swirling that a Guns N' Roses reunion is in the works for 2016. Good news if you are a fan of the band.

Contestant Two: Motorhead

The song is a fitting tribute to Lemmy Kilmister who recently passed away. It comes from the band's last studio album from last year. You can visit my tribute post for Lemmy here if you would like.

Vote in the comments tell me which one you like the best. The one with the most votes will be crowned the winner in a few days. Enjoy and once again Happy New Year!

This is not one of my favorite songs, but of the two of them, I liked Motorhead's version better. I thought the spoken-word approach GnR took was a little too creepy.

Happy New Year!

Well, MIKE, I'll vote for the GUNS 'N' ROSES cover, because I did like the percussion in it, and the Motorhead version was just too noisy for my tastes.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, BUDDY!

Happy 2016, Mike. Looking forward to future posts here, (smile).

Geez, Louise - what a choice today! Finally, I went with Motorhead. Loved the deeper, richer sound, and flipped over the guitar riffs. Enjoy your battle - see you on the 7th.

Happy New Year! I have to give it to Guns and Roses because, even though it is not my cup of tea I thought they did a much better job of it and put their own mark on the song. I loved the guitar in it which sold me along with the bluesy effect they kept. Wayne Rogers and Natalie Cole both passed away by the way-sad loss-Natalie was too young

Guns N Roses version just creeped me out and I have a fondness for Lemmy's rough sounding voice. So My vote goes to Motorhead (may Lemmy rest in peace).

Happy New Year, Mike!

Guns and Roses get my vote on this one, no disrespect to the dear departed. I've always been a fan of their version of the song (liked the Stones, too!).

I'm surprised at my choice but I'm going with Motorhead on this one. I didn't care for G&R's version much at all.
Happy New Year Mike! Hope 2016 is good to you!!

Aw, man... This is an impossible choice. I'm not a fan of GNR, and I really liked Motorhead's version, but... I have history with the GNR version. Plus, Axel's wide-range vocals really bring through the madness I associate with this song. No one does it like the Rolling Stones, certainly, but as far as second-bests go, and to my own chagrin, I have to admit GNR is the pick.

Happy new year, Mike! May it bring you all sorts of unexpected joys :)

Fun fact: I, too, started a year off with a Sympathy For The Devil battle last year - my contenders were Horatio Hernandez featuring Ruben Blades and Jane's Addiction (who ultimately won the battle - and if you haven't yet heard their cover, I think you should definitely check it out posthaste!).

So....tough battle here. I liked bits and pieces of Motorhead's cover, but GNR's version went above and beyond. I was immediately mesmerized by the percussion, then adding in the spoken lyrics in places, the hair metal squeals, and Slash's riffs? I'm in. I *LOVED* their uber-creepy version, and if no one beats me to it, I may revisit this song for another battle, pairing it with the winner of my battle, which was Jane's Addiction. MOtorhead's version was indeed good, but didn't outshine GNR, in my opinion.

Yeah. GNR gets my vote, hands-down. RIP Lemmy.

Not a big fan of this song. I like the Stones, but not so much this song.

No on Guns and Roses. Both versions are pretty true to the Stones so it's a tough choice.

I'll vote for Motorhead. More energy to it.

Normally I'm a GNR fan, but for this song I have to go with Motorhead.
I think they performed it better than GNR. I didn't care for the opening GNR did.

Hi, Mike!

"Sympathy" is Mrs. Shady's favorite Rolling Stones recording. I never heard these two cover versions before and enjoyed them. I like the drum work better in the Motorhead rendition but I like the nastier vocal treatment given the song on the Guns N' Roses take. Overall the GNR version has more of the rock elements I listen for and they get my vote.

(I went to see Meadowlark Lemon and the Harlem Globetrotters in 1963. A great memory of a fabulous basketball player and showman.)

Tough choice. I guess I'll go with Guns & Roses. I thought their creepy take was appropriate. So there you go.
