"Sympathy" is Mrs. Shady'...Hi, Mike!

"Sympathy" is Mrs. Shady's favorite Rolling Stones recording. I never heard these two cover versions before and enjoyed them. I like the drum work better in the Motorhead rendition but I like the nastier vocal treatment given the song on the Guns N' Roses take. Overall the GNR version has more of the rock elements I listen for and they get my vote.

(I went to see Meadowlark Lemon and the Harlem Globetrotters in 1963. A great memory of a fabulous basketball player and showman.) I liked bits and pieces of Motorhead's cover, but GNR's version went above and beyond. I was immediately mesmerized by the percussion, then adding in the spoken lyrics in places, the hair metal squeals, and Slash's riffs? I'm in. I *LOVED* their uber-creepy version, and if no one beats me to it, I may revisit this song for another battle, pairing it with the winner of my battle, which was Jane's Addiction. MOtorhead's version was indeed good, but didn't outshine GNR, in my opinion.

Yeah. GNR gets my vote, hands-down. RIP Lemmy.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1917749460140880592.post-55351457650382084182016-01-02T08:00:04.303-08:002016-01-02T08:00:04.303-08:00Aw, man... Plus, Axel's wide-range vocals really bring through the madness I associate with this song. No one does it like the Rolling Stones, certainly, but as far as second-bests go, and to my own chagrin, I have to admit GNR is the pick.

Happy new year, Mike! I have to give it to Guns and Roses because, even though it is not my cup of tea I thought they did a much better job of it and put their own mark on the song. I loved the guitar in it which sold me along with the bluesy effect they kept.
