Battle of the Bands: Box of Rain

Time to get Grateful on the Battle of the Bands. Today is Phil Lesh's 77th birthday. Phil was the bass player for the Grateful Dead. I'm also going to see Grateful Dead alum Bob Weir next month so it all kinda fits.

The Song: Box of Rain

Box of Rain was written by Phil Lesh and contestant one...

Contestant One: Robert Hunter

Contestant Two: Beth Cassidy

Who gets your vote? Robert or Beth? The lyricist or the singer?  Vote for the one you like the best.  I will count up the votes and provide the results around the 21st. Vote in the comments and we will have a winner soon! If you liked this Battle please check out the other Battle links here. That site has the most up to date list.

Well I hope you enjoyed the Battle and come back and visit soon!

I don't know that I am familiar with this song at all, but that's alright because it makes it easier to not be biased in my vote.

To be honest, both versions put me to sleep. But it was Beth Cassidy that had a little more interest in her cover. My vote is for Beth.

Howdy, MIKE ~
I'm placing my vote for Beth because, to me, Robert sounded like he was a graduate of 'The Kris Kristofferson School of Fake Singing'. HA!

Neither comes near how Grateful Dead did it. Both singers sounded like roving minstrels singing for a scrap of bread, a cup of soup, and a cup of stale beer. Didn't care much for either, but I'll vote for Beth.

I'll help you with your shutout. I didn't really care for Beth's voice, so it's Robert for me.

Fake singing. hahaha.

So this is a soft folk song and the guy reminded me of Perry Como...so mellow he could sing this in bed( look up SCTV with their Perry Como parody). I give it to the gal, Beth because she had a nice voice and made me more attentive to the song.

BIRGIT's comment is great! And it was exactly right. Robert about put me to sleep, and the SCTV "Perry Como" bit -- singing in bed -- was the perfect illustration. (SCTV was what SNL only dreamed of being. Even at its weakest, SCTV was about a godzillion times funnier than SNL at its very best.)

Mike, I'm not familiar with Grateful Dead's mewsic so every time I hear one of their songs I'm usually surprised that it isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I guess I shouldn't judge a book by its cover or band by its name, huh? :) The original is the best no question. Between the two rivaling singers, I preferred the female cover which surprised me. I normally like male vocals better but not in this case. Give my vote to Beth Cassidy. By chance is she related to David Cassidy?
