Battle of the Bands: Louie, Louie

Welcome to Battle of the Bands today's battle was going to be a tribute to David Bowie. I had the songs selected but then I had to go run a family member to urgent care. Nothing life threatening just something that had to be taken care. When I came back someone else was already using the song, so here I am back at square one.

The rules are simple I pick a song and present a couple of bands battling it out with the song. You pick the one you like best by casting your vote in the comments. The whys and other comments are always welcomed.

Please check out the other battles:

Let's get this party started....

The Song "Louie, Louie" here is the original by Richard Berry...

Most of you know the song from this version by The Kingsmen...

Due to the popularity of that version I decided not to use it in the contest.

Contestant One: The Sonics

I picked this 60s garage band since I just ordered tickets to see them as they open for Robert Plant.

Contestant Two: The Kinks

Two bands from the same era. One a big name, one not as big. Which one do you like the best? Vote in the comments.

Hi, Mike!

I am familiar with the Richard Berry original and I have the versions by the Kingsmen and the Kinks in my collection. I never heard the version by the Sonics, but they get my vote in your battle because they perform the song in a garage rock style similar to that of the Kingsmen. It's rough, raw and rowdy - plus - you can't understand the words, and that earns them bonus points! I vote for The Sonics and I hope you enjoy their live show, good buddy!

Place my vote for the Sonics. I think they put more energy into the song.

So here's a little bit of trivia for you. The Kingsmen and Paul Revere & The Raiders recorded Louie Louie within a matter of days of each other - at the same studio.

Great battle! I choose The Kinks for my vote.

The Sonics captured that garage band spirit and in a way almost sounded more like the Kinks than the Kinks did.

However, the Kinks version was cleaner and more musically interesting to me. I vote for the version by the Kinks.

I really liked Paul Revere & the Raiders'version... but they ain't here. Give me the Kinks, please.

What - you're going to see Robert Plant? I bet I get left at home again, right? Bring me a T-shirt, huh?!

I've never heard the original before, so thanks for the introduction. As for the contest, can I vote for Paul Revere and the Raiders? Just kidding, but I like their cover almost as much as the Kingsmen version. Between these two, my vote goes to The Sonics. I like that "garage band" sound a little more.

MIKE ~
A very cool Battle, Brother! And, man, I learned some shit: I had NO IDEA that The Kingsmen recording was a cover. I have ALWAYS thought that was an original. (For 56 years I've been ignorant now!)

Also, that trivia tidbit that Mary Burris provided was really interesting, too! Ain't BOTB great? You can learn the most coolest things!

Between these two, I gotta cast my vote for THE SONICS. This song should be done in that raunchy "garage band" way, and they nailed it. I'd still take The Kingsmen first, but the Sonics did it in a very similar way, while The Kinks were too clean.

I like some of The Kinks' later stuffs - stuffs from the late-'70s - and not so much their stuffs from the '60s. My Kinks pick? The 1977 album 'SLEEPWALKER'. Man, I played that LP to pieces! It wasn't a big hit, really, but it had a ton of under-appreciated tracks on it.

Vote: SONICS.

I give it to The Sonics-they put more effort into the song. I love The Kinks but they seemed to coast through it so Sonics get my vote

Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! Kinks!

Wait a minute...let me think about this one...

Yep...Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! Kinks! I was right the first time.

Before listening I thought easy peasy, The Kinks for sure, but surprise, surprise I liked The Sonics better. Give The Sonics my vote.

Oh, my goodness. I was heartbroken at first thinking you paired The Kingsmen with Richard Berry. Not much better off with The Kinks and The Sonics. I thought for sure I'd love The Kinks version better, but I'm actually voting for The Sonics. I'd never heard of The Sonics, and if you hadn't told me otherwise, I would have assumed they were from the post-punk garage era of the 90s. Love that sound, so give my vote to the lesser known Sonics.

I'm also letting everyone know (in case they have me linked in BotB or keep up with my blog outside of the battles) that I've moved my blog again. I found web hosting for extremely cheap, so I grabbed the opportunity. I'm blogging at reinvintagedgoods.net from here on out. Hope to see you there!

I have to vote for The Sonics. They are so wonderfully raw.

I thought I'd vote The Kinks, but you surprised me. I much preferred The Sonics!

Mike, I love the oldies! The first contender wasn't too pleasing to my ear, but I liked number two and am giving my vote to The Kinks. Nice battle!
