Battle of the Bands: Shoot to Thrill

Sorry haven't been blogging much this week. I had a blast last weekend listening to the swamp music, but getting home at 3 AM on Monday and then getting up for the work week is a little tough. I'm sure  I will blog about last weekend soon.

Anyway back to Rocktober and it is October 15 so time for a new Battle of the Bands!

The rules are simple I pick a song and present a couple of bands battling it out with the song. You pick the one you like best by casting your vote in the comments. The why's and other comments are always welcomed.

Please check out the other battles:

It's a win win really. They get another visit and they treat you with some more battles featuring cool songs, musicians and bands!

This time around I am going to go with AC/DC! They were one of the first bands that really rocked that grabbed my attention. Plus Brian Johnson had a birthday earlier this month so they are a natural fit for Rocktober. If you want more AC/DC checkout my tribute post to Brian Johnson here.

The song: Shoot to Thrill

Contestant One: Halestorm

Contestant Two: Theory of a Deadman

Two contemporary rock bands dueling it out with a classic Ac/DC tune. Just vote for the version you like best and I will return with the results! Hope you enjoyed the battle and I will have a new one November 1st!

LOVE AC/DC!! Great song, this. I'm giving my vote to Theory of a DeadMan. I like the vocals better. At first I thought I'd be voting for Halestorm because they sounded closest to the original but I found that Theory of a DeadMan held me longer than did the other.
Interesting name, Theory of a Deadman...

I'm with MIchele... Theory of a Deadman won me over pretty fast. Halestrom is good, don't get me wrong... They actually sounded pretty close to the original. Too close, actually—thus no sense of something new, something fresh (which, I think, a good cover should have). Given the choice between AC/DC's and theirs, I'd go AC/DC any time, hands down, no hesitation. But the Theory dudes did, I felt, bring something new to their version, and I like that. That's good musicianship. (Is that even a word?) Sooo... another vote for Theory of a Deadman :)

Great battle, Mike! (And thanks for the visit & vote over at Quiet Laughter , too :) )

I'm going with the consensus (so far) and voting for Theory of a Deadman. I like the vocal better, and the sound was dirtier.

Mike, AC/DC is too heavy for me, but I do appreciate that they can sing. Their music isn't my forte is all. I actually liked both contenders cover better than the original and obviously one of them I preferred over the other. This was kinda easy because after a few minutes of listening to each new-to-me artist I knew which sound I liked the best. The group snagging by vote is...*Drum roll please* Theory of a Deadman. That's kinda a cool name for band with Halloween just around the corner. Nice battle!

I'm not an AC/DC fan at all. Halestorm sounded to much like the original so that ruled them out for me. They did a good job with it though, but...

Give my vote to the Deadmen. They changed it up a bit more and I prefer the vocals better on that version.

This is one of the greatest rock songs, isn't it? \m/ Loving this battle, Mike! ☺
As others have said, Halestorm's version was so close to the original and I enjoyed it, but I much preferred the lower register of Tyler Connolly's voice. Please give my vote to Theory of a Deadman. For those who aren't aware, this is a famous Canadian rock band. Just had to sneak that in.

I vote for Halestorm because it made me feel more like dancing in a free and wild way.

Love,
Janie

I'm glad Janie voted for Halestorm, because I hate to see a shutout. Theory of a Deadman was much more my speed! They get my vote.

Give my vote to Halestorm. I felt they performed the song best. I could listen to it over and over. It did sound closer to AC/DC and for this type of song, I'm fine with that. I like AC/DC. So there is that.

I prefer Theory of a Deadman because he doesn't sound like AC/DC:) I know but that voice always grated on me unless I am dancing up a storm to their most famous songs. The lead singer's voice was better to my ears

Yep, I don't dig Heavy Metal at all, either. Well, I shouldn't say "at all" because I like the bands DEEP PURPLE and... and... uhm, OK... I think my list is complete.

Kidding.
I like a little Steppenwolf, and Golden Earring's 'GRAB IT FOR A SECOND' is an excellent, vastly underrated Hard Rock album (if not Heavy Metal).

But AC/DC? One song only: 'Back In Black'. Otherwise, I hate the vocals, hate the vapid lyrics and - most of all - HATE THE SHORT PANTS AND THE STUPID LITTLE HATS!

In this match-up, I'm hearing it the way almost everyone else is: THEORY OF A DEADMAN gets my vote.

Can't fault the music in either version. Both bands can play!! Ya know, I think AC/DC was one of the first metal bands I heard too, and loved the music style ever since. Could also be the wild and crazy friends I had at the time, and AC/DC just fit that vibe.

I liked both versions, and will probably listen to more of each bands music. I'm going with Halestrom for the vote. Felt like I was kickin' it with Ac/DC.

Well, Mike, this was a nice old time romp. Liked both versions of this song.Theory of a Deadman gave me everything I wanted to hear! Thanks, for that.

Gonna go with Theory of a Deadman, just not more the same ole screamin' that came from AC/DC. Not exactly my cup of tea.

Hi, Mike! Looks like I'm getting my vote in just under the "live wire." :) What a coincidence that you and I both picked an AC/DC song for our current battle and that Chuck Berry, the R&B legend who inspired Angus Young's stage antics, celebrated a b-day this week. Another coincidence is the fact that Halestorm hails from Red Lion, PA, which is a community just south of my hometown of York. Mrs. Shady #1 graduated from Red Lion high.

Turning to your battle, I vote for Halestorm because they perform "Shoot To Thrill" in the raw and raucous manner of AC/DC. Deadman's version is a bit more polished and doesn't grab me as much, so I'm giving my vote to Lzzy Hale and her band.

My next BOTB is next Monday, Oct. 26, and I invite you to join the fun and vote.

Thanks, Mike!
