Thanksgiving!

I wish all my readers the best for Thanksgiving! I hope everyone was able to find something to be thankful for as I know sometimes in a world full of troubles that can be hard to find.

The news before thanksgiving was not pleasant. Children getting shot by police, granted the children were playing with toy guns that looked like the real things. The riots in the aftermath of the decision in Ferguson. I wanted to blog about it. However, nothing I could write could change the situation.
I almost fell through the trap door and started blogging about it.

I pray for healing in those communities. I pray for the riots to end and peace to prevail. I hope it wasn't a racial issue. I know the incident has widened the division between races in this melting pot we call America.

I truly hope those racial divides end. I am not a fan of dividing people up in politics the left and the right either. Then there is the religious divide. We are all different. We should celebrate these differences and enjoy living together in harmony.

I am thankful I have friends of different religions, races, and.backgrounds. I am thankful for the ones who have shared their traditions, their food, their culture and truly enriched my life.

That is why my thoughts are on peace and love! No, I am not trying to sound like an old hippy. However peace, love and together is a much greater alternative than what I see in the news. No more riots, no more injustice, no more big divides, lets come together and become something greater.

Maybe give the homeless shelter, maybe feed the hungry without being arrested, maybe lifting up instead of tearing down. If we all work towards that wouldn't we all be more thankful?

Books: A Man Without A Country

Over the weekend I read another library find. This time I returned to an author I have read in the past Kurt Vonnegut. This time instead of reading a classic fiction work like Slaughterhouse-Five I turned to a collection of his essays called A Man Without a Country.

AManWithoutACountry.jpg

Many of the essays revealed truths in the world that are still truth. His essays were bold written like a writer not afraid to write his mind. I enjoyed the book more than I thought I would. I enjoyed Slaughterhouse-Five and after reading A Man Without a Country I look forward to reading more works by Kurt Vonnegut.

Thanks for visiting and I will be back soon with a new post!

Books: Secrets of St. Vincent

I said I would get back to blogging about books again this month and here I am. I finally signed up for my library card. The library has very strange hours and I could complain about that or wish it was larger. However, I will be grateful for what they have and they still have real books.

Anyway I found another mystery book set in Florida and today I found out it is part of a trilogy. No it is not Bob Morris again. I  discovered Charles Farley. Unfortunately, I unknowingly picked the middle book. The book I am writing about Secrets of St. Vincent.

What I liked about the book was that it took place in a different time. The panhandle of Florida was quite different in the 1930s and Farley captured my imagination with panthers and 15 foot long alligators. Then there was the mystery. The book had a bit of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird with an African American blues musician accused of a crime he did not commit.

Murders, wilderness, history, race relationships, a man's fate hanging in the cell of a prison are all ingredients in this mystery plus a few more twists.

I've liked other mysteries better. Perhaps if I read the first book in the series I would have enjoyed this one more. The book didn't grab me at times. However, the book delivered a lot and overall was a pleasant read!

The battles take place on the first and 15th and winners will be announced on the 7th and 21st. I will normally post the winner in the comments. Of course have fun and enjoy!

Alex J. Cavanaugh

When I first heard this song, heartbroken wondering the wine country of California and then boom! Over the airwaves of what had to be one of the coolest public radio station came Widespread Panics "Hope in a Hopeless World." It became one of my favorite songs and the perfect song for me at the time.

Phil Roy- Original Artist Not in Battle

Phil Roy originally wrote the song and here he performs his masterpiece..

First Challenger Eric Bibb

Second Challenger Widespread Panic

Enjoy the battle. This time I have two studio versions against each other. Vote in the comments and enjoy! Sorry a bit late in the day. I didn't have to work today and my daughter dragged me out to an event she wanted to go to and got out of the house, unplugged, and enjoyed the sunshine with a book.

Happy Birthday to the late Toy Caldwell

It is a great week to celebrate Toy Caldwell's birthday since earlier in the week it was Veteran's Day. Usually I write a blog post about the holiday. This year I missed it due to life. The Veteran's Day Post I like the best is this one.

What does celebrating Toy Caldwell's birthday and Veteran's Day have to do with each other? Toy Caldwell was a veteran. He enlisted in the Marines and served in Vietnam where he was injured. He returned to service after his injury and served from 1966 to 1969.

Music is what Toy Caldwell is mostly known for and in our tribute to Toy we will post a few songs.
One of his best known songs is "Can't You See" which he did when he was in The Marshall Tucker Band. The song features Toy on vocals this version comes from 1973...

Here he performs "Midnight Promises" which features some session work from Greg Allman...

Here Toy performs "I Hear the South Calling My Name"

Hope you enjoyed the story and the music! Thanks for visiting!

Happy Birthday Neil Young!

Busy times for Neil Young personally and musically. I don't judge to much on this blog. His former band mates same to judge a bit more. It is safe to say Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young aren't getting together anytime soon to jam.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young..."Ohio"

Today is Neil Young's birthday is today and we celebrate it with music! Here is his latest song "Who is Gonna Stand Up"...

From now to way back with Buffalo Springfield performing with "Mr. Soul"..

Here he performs a vintage version of "Old Man"

To contrast here is something plugged in with Crazy Horse called "Like a Hurricane"

With Neil Young we could go on with songs heavy and light. Happy Birthday and thanks for the songs!

Furthur Calls it Quits

Furthur covering The Clash with "Train in Vain"

From the groups website:

"Thanks for making the Furthur community a great place to hang out, and for coming out to the shows. We'll all be keeping very busy over the foreseeable future, and it's time to let Furthur take a bow"

Source linked here.

Below is a HQ video of the group covering a Grateful Dead song "Jack Straw" of course Furthur includes both Bob Weir and Phil Lesh from The Grateful Dead.

Some might be saddened that the group is calling it quits but many Deadheads are being very optimistic about what might come next. Since the Grateful Dead will be marking their 50th Anniversary soon. Below the group performs "Alligator:

Here the band performs Pink Floyd's "Time"

Fitting to close with "Time" since the group is calling it time to quit. Thanks for the songs, and thanks for  keeping the spirit of the Grateful Dead I look forward to what comes next!

November the month ahead

Another month has rolled by and this blog continues to ramble on. Here I attempt to write a post about what this blog is going to be about, or do this month when in truth I haven't a clue. I can promise you it won't include pictures of me in my "No-shave" November. In a month could I look like a member of ZZ Top, Duck Dynasty, or Santa Claus. Because I am not a participant in that but I know a couple of people I could annoy by doing that maybe next year. .I won't be posting my excerpts from a novel I am hurriedly writing in a month.Though the novel might have some appeal to me at some point. Of course there is the procrastinator in me, who would wait till the 30th and write the novel pressed against the deadline. I'm sure it might break a rule or two.

I'm not knocking either one. I'm just not doing those this November. To those participating in the novel writing thing I wish you the best. Even if I had no day job, no family distractions, I don't think I could write one in a month. I am continuing to do the Battle of the Bands twice a month. A weekly football post. But what else? That is a good question. Well I am reading a book or two which could translate into a post or two about books. Something I have done before but not in quite a while.

Maybe the post about a birthday, death. or maybe I will share something I experience. Some of the blog is predictable other parts are a mystery. Maybe I will decorate the blog with holiday lights, wait I am already too late for that! Dang Wal-Mart, K-Mart, and every big box store decorated in August! Well you will see what comes out as you follow this blog this month!
