Battle of the Bands: Eight Miles High

David Crosby passed away earlier this year. I thought I would pay tribute to him with a song like I did Jeff Beck last go around. A song from Crosby, Stills and Nash would make sense, but I thought I would go farther back to The Byrds. A group Cros founded and pick a song he co-wrote.

The Byrds "Eight Miles High"

Contender One: Roxy Music

Contender Two: Tom Petty &The Heartbreakers

Tell me who you like best in the comments Roxy Music or Tom Petty and I will close the polls around the 8th and announce a winner.

Battle of the Bands Results: Petty, Page and Crowes Cover Green

My August 1st battle voting started with a welcome surprise a new voter. Tom Petty was on the board. Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes shaked their money maker into the next two votes. Tom Petty wouldn't back down and came back with four straight votes. Stephen even tried to vote twice ! Talking about things happening twice I had a second new voter as well. So we are at 5 to 2 Tom Petty. The two bands split the last two votes so the final score was Tom Petty 6 Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes 3. I wish had cool tee shirts I could send out for the new voters. It was nice to get some new voters and it is nice to get the votes from the regulars.

Please don't be like this song...

"Don't Come Around Here Know More"

Starting are Tom Petty celebration!

"Stop Draggin' My Heart Around"

Tom Petty with a connection to another side of Fleetwood Mac, a landslide away from Peter Green's band.

Hopefully "Something Good Coming" ..

Thanks for visiting I will have a new battle on the 15th and probably a post between now and then!

Battle of the Bands: Oh Well!

Peter Green passed away a few days ago. I did a tribute post to him but I held back a gem of a song called "Oh Well." It is right up my alley classic guitar fueled blues rock.

The second verse is fitting, I can imagine him having this conversation entering heaven..

Now, when I talked to God, I knew He'd understand
He said, "Stick by my side and I'll be your guiding hand
But don't ask me what I think of you
I might not give the answer that you want me to"

There is probably a lot of truth to that verse for everyone. Thankfully there is a whole lot of grace.  Hear my full sermon at the Church of the Late Night Rock and Roller.

Fleetwood Mac "Oh Well"

Next I have two contenders. To be part of the great democracy I have established here 6 years ago after being shown the great path to freedom by Stephen and company. You can find a full list of bloggers on similar musical roads at his site. I admit sometimes the freedom turns into anarchy  but that's okay  it is usually better than the real world. Anyway I have two contenders you vote in the comments which version you liked the best or hated the least and I count up the votes and post about a winner in a week or so.

Contender One: Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes

Contender Two: Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

Hope you enjoyed the Battle, I look forward to reading nd counting your votes! I will have another Battle on the 15th and in between I will post the winner of this Battle and probably a few more posts. As always you are welcome to visit, enjoy the snacks help yourself to a beverage.

Rocktober Music Fest Celebrating Tom Petty's Birthday

Celebrating Birthday's of Late Rock and Rollers is where I am in this Rocktober Music Fest. Tom Petty who passed away two years ago in October would have celebrated his 68th birthday today. I paid tribute to his passing here and I have celebrated his birthday before.

Try to do it different each time, different songs and different words. I try not to do repeats but I don't think my readers would mind.

                                            Mudcrutch "I Forgive it All"

Right off the back I am digging up Mudcrutch.

Tom Petty "I Won't Back Down"

The Traveling Wilbury's "Handle with Care"

Tom Petty "A Face in the Crowd"

I hope you enjoyed and I will be back with a new post soon!

R.I.P Tom Petty

My bucket lists of artists I want to see keeps getting shorter without me getting to see the performer.  I became a fan of Tom Petty somewhere in the 80s.  Probably from "Damn the Torpedoes" to "Full Moon Fever" where my peak Tom Petty eras.

However my favorite song was  later tune. A song of hope. Fitting for a week filled with news from Las Vegas, Petty passing and whatever might be going wrong.

                                                     "Something Good Coming"

He showed us "Even the Losers Get Lucky" and we are all losers now..

+

His music was done with a"Southern Accents"

Life is still "Jammin' Me"

I could go on and on. I might come back with a part two. Tom Petty will be missed.

Happy Birthday Tom Petty

Today Tom Petty celebrates his 65th birthday. I celebrated his birthday last year with a song filled post which you can revisit here. I will do much the same on this post but with different songs.

"So lets get to the point" and start off with "You Don't Know How it Feels"

As an added twist I thought I would share some music featuring Tom Petty in other bands besides being solo and with the Heartbreakers. Starting with his band Mudcrutch.

Here is Mudcrutch with "The Wrong Thing to Do"..

A fun group he was in was The Traveling Wilburys.."End of the Line"

I'll end with "Don't Come Around Here No More"

Of course you are welcome to come around here as much as you like! Feel free to share any musical memories you would like about Tom Petty in the comments. I will have a new post soon! Thanks for visiting.

Sam Smith's Stay With Me and Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down

Almost like an in between Battle of the Bands. Sam Smith and Tom Petty have come to an agreement over Smith's song "Stay With Me." Apparently it is too close to Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down." Under the agreement Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne will receive 12.5% of the song royalties each as co-writers. According to several sources including USA Today.

To be honest I am a bigger fan of Tom Petty's music than I am of Sam Smith's music.             However with that being said I do think Sam Smith is a talented vocalist and his song "Stay with Me" is a beautiful pop song. Take a listen for yourself...

I also like Tom Petty's "I Won't Back Down." Though musically the songs may be similar I find the content of the two songs and the overall sound to be quite different.

What are your thoughts?

Just songs..

Just a few songs for the way I feel. Sometimes there is a lot of smoke and mirrors. There are things in my world not going the way I would like and then there are things in the world that aren't going well too. So, I thought I would share some songs. Perhaps a bit of musical therapy for me. I hope you enjoy.

This song I heard for the first time in the Wine Country of California. At the time a relationship had gone sour and I heard this on public radio. Northern California Public Radio sounded pretty cool back then. It kind of fits for the way I feel tonight. The situation is a little different but I could use a little Hope..

This song from Tom Petty grabbed me when I heard it. Again another good fit for tonight...

When in doubt always go with Bob Marley. His music always provides those positive vibrations...

Well just sharing a few tunes. Good night and I will be back with another post soon,,,
