Battle of the Bands: Coyote

As promised I moved away from  Montrose. In honor of the late Jaco Pastorius birthday, I thought I would pull a song from Joni Mitchell's jazz years. Jaco is the bass player on the song..."Coyote"

Contender One: Bailen

Contender Two: Glen Hansard

If you like contrasts I have a few on this one. Female Vs Male vocals. Full band vs stripped down singer guitar. Vote for the one you like the best in the comments.

Excellent song choice from one of Mitchell's best albums.

Frequently I'd to with a male vocal over a female, but this is an easy pick for the female.
Gotta go with Bailen's version. The female vocalist delivers the goods and the backing complements her well.

Well, to be honest, no Joni Mitchell fan am I. Don't like her voice, don't like her meandering lyrics, don't like her oh-so-serious pretentiousness.

I was pretty sure I'd be voting for Hansard because, although the bass playing was good in the Bailen version, I found the singer's vocal quality grated on my nerves even worse than Joni does.

But then I listened to Hansard (for about a minute and a half) and realized that the necessary gender-change for the song simply does not work for me at all. Plus, watching Hansard's facial contortions annoyed me even more than Bailen's vocal quality did. So... vote for BAILEN.

Sorry, MIKE, wish I could be more upbeat about the Battle but... well... you understand, I'm sure. I'll bet many of my Battles ain't zactly been yer mug o' beer, either. "It's life, and life only" (as Mr. Zimmerman sang).

Bring back Sammy Hagar! I've changed my mind about him!! ;-D

This is Birgit here...Issues at work, anyway, I vote for Bailen who gave a nice rendition of this song. The dude's style was irritating to me

I have to agree with Lee on this one. Bailen brings it. She gets my vote.

Mike,

I can't say that I like either artist well but I believe Bailen easily beats her male opponent. :)

It's taken me close to 50 years to appreciate Joni Mitchell's genius. She had like 100 different tunings that she'd use on different songs. Bailen gets this; Hansard doesn't. Besides, this is a woman's song. Bailen gets my vote.

Once again (I say that because I've been surprised several times this go 'round), I am a huge Glen Hansard fan. Love, love, love him all the way back to the Frames.

But BAILEN has to get my vote. Clean, tight, thank God that girl can keep a beat, because I have heard this tune butchered by amateurs that need to be tappin' that foot in rhythm to keep up, lol.

NICE BATTLE! Loved it. Happy holidays, my friend!
