This rounds song:

Who knows where this song originally claim. Most agree Billy Roberts penned the song so for a point a reference I will use his version.

So many versions to choose for in a battle of bands..

First Challenger

Seal is such an incredible vocalist and David Gilmour is a guitar great. Enjoy their version..

Second Challenger

The late great Roy Buchanan..

Both versions probably draw more from the Jimi Hendrix version than Billy Roberts or any of the earlier versions. Buchanan is perhaps a more undiscovered guitarist. I was going to use underrated guitarist but everyone I know who knows of him raves about him.

Anyway these are my picks for this competition. Vote in the comments!  Feel free to share your favorite versions as well since this song has been done once or twice!

"Hey Joe" is one of those simple songs that everyone knows and has been jammed over a gazillion times. I played it a ton and am truthfully kind of sick of it -- I've had enough "Hey Joe" to last me the rest of my life. ;)

But you give two very good renditions here. I am a huge David Gilmour fan -- he's been a big influence on me. He's no shredder -- I've always loved how he can get so much power and expression out of each note. But this version with Seal has that feel of a "let's throw this together for a fundraiser" kind of super-group pairing. Extremely competent musicians and a fun rendition, but lacking some soul and authenticity.

Roy Buchanan is a legend; a Jedi Master of the telecaster. I knew within three notes that I was voting for him, but watched and enjoyed the whole video. He has such soulful, evocative, emotional playing.

So Roy Buchanan by a mile for me.

Roy Buchanan... what a guitar player. Gilmour and Seal did a good job, but my vote is for Buchanan.

Gilmour and Seal - what an unlikely combination. I listened to the original and it didn't jive with me. (Sorry, just not my kind of music.) But when I listened to the Seal-Gilmour one, I dug it. Seal has such an amazing voice and you can't beat Gilmour's guitar in that version.
They win hands down.

Make mine a 'Pink Gilmour' on the rocks, please.

When I listen to Roy Buchanan (who could definitely play that thing) I can't help thinking about Danny Gatton who could shove a Telecaster up Buchanan's butt and still play it better than Buchanan did.

So... make mine a 'Pink Gilmour' on the rocks (even though I never did and still don't like this song).

Of course I know the Hendrix version the best. It was a pleasure to listen to the first one who wrote it. I couldn't get into Seal's voice at all. He has an amazing voice but it sounded too smooth for this type of song. The 2nd version wins hands down for me. Not due to his voice (I must giggle) but to his amazing guitar playing which left me spellbound. Buchanan gets my vote

Tough challenge; both versions have their merit. Just can't go wrong with Gilmour.

But I really loved Roys version. The music seemed to enhance the story of the lyrics.

This is a song that I had tentatively scheduled to use in January. I can still use it as my performance picks were different.

But I might not use it because ironically I quite dislike the song (and I see I'm not alone judging from other comments) and since so many others dislike the song there may be no point in using this song to do what I seem to do best--pick songs that people don't appreciate.

I recognize the song's place in rock history. Plenty of artists have covered it. Why oh why so many of them feel like this is some kind of showcase piece where they can play extra long and do flashy stuff I'll never know since there are so many other better songs out there.

But enough of my rant. If the shorter original had been up I'd have picked that one partly because it's shorter and also it has less pretension.

Buchanan is good, but doesn't turn me on that much.

I vote for the Gilmour/Seal team. I enjoy hearing Seal's voice and David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists. With the production put into their version the song is somewhat listenable even though it's still "Hey Joe".

I don't think I'll be using this song after all. I've talked myself out of it.

I really liked the intro on the Buchanan version, but it was all downhill from there. I wasn't a fan of his vocal presentation.

Moving on to Seal/Gilmour... I think Seal has a good voice and the Gilmour guitar bits were very nice. I don't have any musical words to explain my choice.

So, put me down for Seal/Gilmour.

and the winner is Seal/Gilmour 5 to 4

Believe it or not, but I have not heard this song before now. Yeah, I know what you're thinking, "What planet is this gal from?" Honestly, I wonder where my brain has been for years regarding music. How is so much as escaped me? Oh well...that's not why I'm here and you don't want to hear it, I'm sure. lol First off, I like the song. Nice choice! Also, I like your two competitors for this this song. Although, I like Buchanan I think I prefer Gilmour & Seal's cover the best. My vote is late, I know and it may not get factor into the count, but I wanted to pitch my vote anyhow. Thanks for visiting while I was on vacation. See you next month!
