Cal Ripken Jr known as baseball's Iron Man for breaking Lou Gehrig's consecutive games played record and also set the league's record for most consecutive innings played. He won awards from the get-go Rookie of the Year, World Series Champion, Two-time MVP, 19-time All-Star, and capped off with an induction to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Earl Weaver the legendary former manager of the Baltimore Orioles passed away this week.
Some of his highlights..
He managed the team from 1968 to 1982. That kind of tenure is almost unheard of today in baseball.
Ejected from a World Series game..
He also managed the O's from 1985 to 1986. He was the winning manager of the 1970 World Series. His team won 4 American League Pennants. His number is retired, he is in the Baseball Hall of Fame, and on a personal note the manager of the home team for the first Major League baseball game I ever attended.

Earl Weaver was a Baltimore legend, a baseball legend who will be missed by his family, friends, and fans. May he rest in peace.
Don Baylor passed away this week at the age of 68. He started his baseball playing career with the Baltimore Orioles and ended with the Oakland A's.

338 home runs, an All-star, a World Series Champion, an MVP, inducted to the Angels Hall of Fame, and a National League Manager of the Year Award highlight his career. He provided memories for baseball fans and will be missed.
Best known for his years playing with the Philadelphia Phillies Darren Daulton also passed away this week. He was only 55. He is on the Philadelphia Baseball Wall of Fame, a three time All-Star and a World Series Champion with the Miami Marlins.

He will be remembered by Philadelphia fans for years to come.
I remember Earl Weaver as the manager of the Orioles from my teen years. I was living in the Washington DC area at the time, closer than I do these days, and well Washington didn't have a team. Baltimore had the Orioles and they were the home team. He was a colorful baseball manager. He managed some good teams for the O's. He died in his sleep from an apparent heart attack. His wife by his side. He was 82 and died aboard an Orioles' Fantasy Cruise ship.
He had a career record of 1480-1060. He was the manager of the Orioles from 1968-1982 and als 1985-1986. His number was retired by the Baltimore Orioles and he became a member of the baseball Hall of Fame. Baseball lost one of their best managers.

This has been one of the greatest post seasons for baseball. I could be biased, I do have a family connection to the San Francisco Giants and two local teams to me the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals were in the playoffs as well.
I think it all started on the last day of the regular season when the Oakland A's over took the Texas Rangers to win that division.
Then every divisional series came down to the wire going 5 games...
The New York Yankees beat their division rival Baltimore Orioles 3 games to 2...here are highlights from a game the O's win but the Yankees would win the series
Then the Detroit Tigers eliminated the Oakland A's 3 games to 2. In this series Detroit won the first two, then the A's won 2 before the Tigers won the last one.
Then the St. Louis Cardinals broke the Washington Nationals hearts in game five rallying back from a 5-1 deficit to win the series..
The San Francisco Giants lost the first two games to the Cincinnati Reds and had to win the last three to advance to the Championship series..
Okay the Detroit Tigers swept the New York Yankees to advance to the World Series..
Not much drama in that series.
The St. Louis Cardinals had a 3 game to 1 lead on the Giants but San Francisco won the next three in a row to advance to the World Series..
I'm looking forward to the World Series between the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants, hoping for one more great series in 2012!

I'm a sports fan. Those who know me, know I am married into a baseball family. Those who read this blog know I write about players such as Beau. This is different...
I followed baseball as a kid. I would watch the Braves or Cubs game on TV with my Granddad who I visited in the summer. When the family of my youth settled down outside of Washington, D.C well I would occasionally go to baseball games in Baltimore at Memorial Stadium..
Mike Flanagan was a Cy Young Award winning pitcher for the team I got to see.So, today when the news came he died it was a little personal. It was a player from my youth passing away. It was the passing of a memory.
The way he died was terrible. You assume a person like him who is living a dream life wouldn't have problems. But he is human and he had his problems. Maybe i t touches me more since I have problems, I have struggles but I am not suicidal. Yes but till today Mike Flanagan wasn't either. Scary thoughts.
I feel for his family who lost a husband, a dad, and for the fans who lost a hero, to his teammates who lost a team member, and to his friends who lost a friend.
