After Midnight and it will be 2019! Happy New Year's everyone. It is time for the first Battle of the Bands of 2019. The song is J.J Cale's "After Midnight." It's a New Year's Party lets go with three versions.
Contender One: Eric Clapton
Contender One: Eric Clapton
Contender Two: J.J. Cale
Contender Three: John Mayer Trio
Eric Clapton's rocking 1988 version, the original, or John Mayer's exploration who gets your vote? Vote for the version you like best in the comments. I will count them up and announce a winner before 2020. Hope you have a safe Holiday!

I know this song is a classic, but it's never been a favorite of mine. The versions you've presented are all pretty good. I like this Clapton performance better than the original with which I am familiar--I've never heard this newer version before. The John Mayer version is fantastic with the jazzy instrumentation.
But for me the best version is still that laid back sound of J J Cale. The way he sings it is more fitting with the nature of the song. My vote goes to the songwriter--J J Cale.

I ran this same battle in Jan 2016 (minus John Mayer). It will be interesting to see how your results differ from mine.
I'm casting my vote for JJ Cale today.
Happy New Year!

Happy New Year, Mike! For my money, the original has always been the best, so chalk up another vote for JJ.
Happy 2019, MIKE!
Good Battle, Bro!
The version of this song that I have heard most often (and still like the best) is Eric Clapton's. But not THIS Clapton recording. There's another one that's smoother, and that's my favorite.
But of these recordings...
The John Mayer Trio had great musicianship and I'm tempted to vote for them.
The JJ Cale original I like the least. Regardless of what he's sayin', JJ ain't gon' do sh*t after midnight. You can tell that he's already half-asleep and he will be deep in dreamland long, long before midnight ever gets here. He's totally bluffin'.
THIS rendition by Eric Clapton kind of put me off right at first, because I was comparing it with his rendition that I know and like better. But the longer he played and the more I listened, the more I really started to warm up to this. He got some pretty rough 'n' rowdy guitar tones in there and HIM I believe when he says the sh*t gon' hit the fan after midnight. I'm buyin' what Clapton is sellin' here.

Mike,
After listening to all three artists, my preferred singer is Eric Clapton. JJ was just too mellow and while I thought John Mayer Trio was somewhat using a bit of your imagination I could hear the similarity to Clapton's version but at the same time too different to sway me to get on board. Interesting & fun battle.
May the Lord bless your throughout 2019 with good health, much happiness, and success in all you do, my friend!
I liked all three versions, but the original by J.J. Cale has the best bluesy vibe, in my opinion. Cale gets the vote!
Hey, Mike, Happy New Year!
Love this song and I really wanted to vote for the John Mayer Trio...but J J Cale was better than JMT. So you'd think I'd go with J J Cale...
BUT CLAPTON OWNS THIS SONG, MAN. Ha ha ha...I have always loved his version of After Midnight (the background stuff is a factor).
A vote for Eric Clapton!!
Thanks, Mike!
