R.I.P Doris Day

Doris Day passed away yesterday at the age of 97.  During her long career as an actress and singer she has earned the Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Lifetime Achievement Grammy.

Happy Belated Birthday Chief Dr. Joe Medicine Crow

I heard it was Chief Joe Medicine Crow's birthday on Facebook. However, after a little research I found out his birthday was actually October 27. Still living to be 102 years old is quite a feat and to live such an extraordinary life is more amazing. I am still going to celebrate his birthday on my blog even if it is late. At 102 I might not have that many more chances too.

With Veteran's Day just around the corner celebrating Dr. Joe Medicine Crow's birthday makes even more sense. He is a decorated World War II veteran who was honored with the Presedential MEdal of Freedom.

It is quite an achievement to earn a Master's Degree. Quite an accomplishment to be the first one in your family to achieve this. Dr. Crow was the first member of the Crow tribe to earn a Master's Degree!

He is the last living person with a direct oral history of the Battle of Little Bighorn from a participant.

A veteran, a leader, an achiever, Chief Dr. Joe Medicine Crow has lived quite a life. He is a hero to his people and to ours! 

Remembering Mother Teresa on her BIrthday

Today August 26, 2015 is Mother Teresa's birthday. Though she passed away 18 years ago. I wish she was still alive doing her humanitarian deeds. One of the reasons is a very selfish reason on my part. I just love to hear what great works she was doing now or anybody. I am tired of the political, racist junk I see when I go onto facebook or read headlines somewhere.

So on her birthday I am missing the positive things she did.  I don't want to go into politics on this post or religion. I am straddling those lines. But that is not where I want to take this post. I simply want to celebrate her life and her great deeds.

Remembering the legacy of Roberto Clemente

Today, August 18, 2015 Roberto Clemente would have turned 81. The Pittsburgh Pirates baseball great died tragically in an airplane crash on New Year's eve of 1972. He was on the plane headed to help Nicaraguan earthquake victims.

He was a 2-time World Series Champion and the MVP of the 1971 World Series. Clemente was a 15 time All-Star and a 12-time Gold Glove winner. In 1966 he was named the National League MVP. His career span 1955-1972.

The Hall of Fame player was great on the field which allowed him to be greater off the field. His charities involvements allowed him to get recognized after his death with a Congressional Gold Medal, Presidential Citizens Medal and Presidential Medal of Freedom.

R.I.P Dean Smith

Dean Smith the legendary former head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels has passed away at the age of 83.

Dean Smith won 879 games in his coaching career. His teams won two National Championships and appeared in 11 NCAA Final Fours. The Atlantic Coast Conference has always been known as a power basketball conference. Winning 17 regular season conference titles and 13 conference tournaments adds to his status.He was a four time National Coach of the Year and nine time conference coach of the year.He was also the coach of the 1976 Gold Medal winning Olympic Basketball team.

If Hall of Fame memberships equals greatness Dean Smith had it covered.

He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1983, the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1981, the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1996 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007.

Maybe his greatest stat was 96.6% of his athletes received their degrees! A true legendary coach for North Carolina and perhaps a model of what coaches should be,

Joe Franklin is considered a pioneer of the modern variety and talk show. In a television career lasting 43 years Franklin interviewed over 30000 guests. 88 is a long life and one we can celebrate.

Ernie Banks

Ernie Bank nearly made it to 84 before he passed away. His last major award came in 2013 when he was honored with The Presidential Medal of Freedom. That is an award not many baseball players receive.

Ernie Banks was elected into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977..

His stats would be better if he hadn't been in military service for a couple of years and playing in the Negro League. Still 14 All Star seasons out of 18 in the Majors is outstanding. He also won two MVP Awards, The Chicago Cubs retired his number 14 years ago.
