Battle of the Bands: Morning Dew Grudge Match

"Morning Dew" has been covered by many bands. I could easily pick from The Grateful Dead, Jeff Beck Group, Robert Plant and many more. I chose another route. Two singer songwriters have claimed writing the iconic song. So instead of the tried and true format of original then two contenders I will have a twist. Two songs, two "originals" and they are both contenders.

Tim Rose

Bonnie Dobson

Vote in the comments! Simply let me know if you like Tim's version or Bonnie's version best. I will count up the votes and announce a winner soon.

Tim Rose sounds like he's singing through a mouthful of oatmeal to me. I'll go with Bonnie Dobson.

I was interested to read the Wikipedia account about this song. It was inspired by one of my favorite movies, On the Beach. I'd never listened to the lyrics of the song so I wasn't aware of the post-apocalyptic nature of the song story.

Bonnie Dobson's version is nice in it's traditional folk influenced sound with the big production behind it. But Tim Rose delivers the message more convincingly.

My vote goes to Tim Rose.

Tough one! I love Tim Rose's gritty vocals, but am not crazy about the arrangement. Bonnie Dobson's version is more "soulful", but her voice didn't thrill me. In the end, I have to go with Tim Rose; he gives it more veritas.

Tim Rose was a bit rough around the edges for me. I preferred Bonnie Dobson. she gets my vote.

Mike,

I like both songs and artists. They each have qualities that I like. Within the first few seconds of each I wasn't sure which way I'd go but in the end I felt while I like Bonnie's flower-power vibes of her song in the early hours she had too much bravado which I didn't like. I switched back to contender #1 to listen to the entire recording. I definitely like the vocals better and the rock arrangement really got me going this morning. Give my vote to Tim Rose please. :)

Hi Mike,
Wow, this is a tough call to make. I really like both versions. I like how they twist the lyrics based on the narrator's gender. Both songs have that quintessential 60s sound. I wish I could split my vote. I wonder what this song would sound like if Tim Rose had done it while he was teamed up with Mama Cass Elliot in The Big 3?
Can I split my vote?? Give a half-vote to each?

I'm hard-pressed here to make a choice. Honestly it's just a coin flip because I like both of them equally. Today I'll go ahead and cast my vote for Tim Rose. (Tomorrow I'd probably cast my vote for Bonnie Dobson).

Great battle Mike. Nicely done! I have a feeling it's going to be a close one...Anxious to see how this one turns out.

I don't think I ever heard this song before, nor do I believe I've ever heard of either singer.

Most of the time, I gravitate toward male singers more than female singers, but in this case, I think John nailed it with the line: "Tim Rose sounds like he's singing through a mouthful of oatmeal." I don't know if that was really a problem with Tim or the sound engineer but, either way, it causes me to vote for BONNIE DOBSON.

I'm curious to look into this and see how two different people can be claiming authorship of the song. Who is being recognized by the industry (via royalty payments) as the true writer? I guess I'll find out.

I give my vote to Bonnie who's voice is so beautiful, strong but wistful. The other one is ok but his voice bothered me a bit
