R.I.P Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck without a doubt was one of the greatest guitarists ever.  An artist I saw several times, the last time being September 30th. He is the reason I bought a Fender Stratocaster and an artist I have featured numerous times on my Battle of the Bands. Jeff was in the Yardbirds and had an incredible solo career. He played sessions with a who's who list of artists.

His cover of "A Day in the Life"

"Where Were You"

Jeff Beck an influencer, a creative artist, and a guitarist who's music will live on.

Battle of the Bands: Getting the Led Out for Rocktober

Welcome to October, often referred to Rocktober. I haven't rocked out in a Battle of the Bands for a while. I love Rock and Roll, I just enjoy other music as well. I enjoy throwing in twists and bouncing genres during the battles. Let's go with a little Led Zeppelin.

This time around it is "Heartbreaker" off of Led  Zeppelin II...

Next I have two contenders. Hopefully you will give them a listen and tell me which version you like best in the comments. I count those as votes and announce a winner in about a week. It is really pretty simple. Today I am pitting two guitarists against each other Alvin Youngblood Hart versus Steve Morse I hope you enjoy!

 Contender One: Alvin Youngblood Hart

Contender Two: Steve Morse

Thanks for visiting! Stay tuned for new posts and the next Battle will take place 11.01.21

Battle of the Bands Results: Lute versus Guitar

The Battle between the guitar and lute was much closer than the blues guitar slingers playing nursery rhymes battle I had last time. Ieva Baltmiskyte and her lute bested Christoph Denoth and his guitar. Dowland's Frog Galliard set the playground for one instrument to shine.

Here she performs Dowland's Fantasia No. 7

Please join me for another Battle of the Bands on the 15th.

Battle of the Bands: In Your Own Sweet Way

Welcome to my Battle of the Bands! My battles are going in it's own sweet way hanging out in jazz land.  Much like the last battle I have a jazz standard by a jazz giant and my contestants include one of the best jazz guitarists versus another jazz giant.

The song I picked is "In Your Own Sweet Way" by Dave Brubeck

Next I am going to have two contenders Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery compete with their versions. In the comments you drop me a line and tell me which one you liked better. I count them up after a week or so and announce the winner in a new post.

                                              Contender One: Miles Davis

]

Contender Two: Wes Montgomery

I hope you enjoyed! Thanks for visiting. I'm open for suggestions for future battles, I'm ready for your votes, give me your feedback in the comments!

Battle of the Bands: Results with an Asterisk

Do we have a tie? Do we have a decision? Do we apply an asterisk? We have controversy! Were the Russians involved (Not that I would care. Heck they are more than welcome the votes!)  Where is Geraldo Rivera?

If it's rule a tie I can't do overtime. Hard pressed to find two more decent covers and the length of the tune.

John went with Henrik and Arlee went with Gary. Cathy casted for Henrik. Then Stephen the co-founder of this crazy bloghop, an overall great man, and a notorious double voting outlaw came and voted for Gary Moore. He also casted a guest vote from Judge Al Bondigas also for Gary. The Honorable Judge is also apparently Stephen's brother. I'll leave this up to Geraldo! A Judge has connections, could tie my life in litigation, drive me bankruptcy in legal fees. Geraldo could solve everything by finding a vault by the legendary Gangster of Love Steve Miller. Inside said vault is all the votes from people who visit and don't leave a vote. But alas the vault would be empty but I could "take the money and run" with Geraldo.

See how crazy this world has gotten when the writing goes from Stephen, a Judge, Geraldo and Steve Miller.

Birgit voted for Gary Moore. Talking about outlaws,  Sixgun McItchyfinger was next calling for the Postmaster General to investigate the shady votes from Stephen. He voted for Henrik. Perhaps it could be decided by a duel. A safe duel where safety is first. Maybe rubber band guns used with proper safety glasses. Social distanced wearing the dang mask.

So Gary Moore wins this one by one more vote! What a great battle almost closer than I tie. The great late Gary Moore wins with an asterisk.

                                              He "Still Got the Blues"

Probably that darn asterisk!

He was "Waiting in the Wings"

I will leave you with this song..

Come back September for more fun! Of course any hard times, kidding is all in good fun, without Stephen you probably wouldn't be reading this!

Battle of the Bands: The Messiah Will Come Again

If you don't like long, guitar tunes you might want to skip my battle this time around.  If you can only listen to one, listen to the one by the original artist it is a masterpiece.  Now if you like long guitar pieces you have found the right battle. The tune is from Roy Buchanan who died on August 14, 1988.  If you can make it through the tunes please vote in the comments.

Roy's version:

Alright you vote for the one you like between the two contenders.

Contender One: Henrik Freischlader

Contender Two: Gary Moore

A song by one of the best guitarists you might not of heard of with his song performed by someone famous and a lesser known artist. Enjoy the battle see you soon!

Battle of the Bands Results: No Sleepwalk in this 4 to 3 Battle

I've always enjoyed Jeff Beck's version of "Sleepwalk" by Santo and Johnny. I enjoyed this battle because I got to find a worthy challenger in Joe Satriani. I also enjoyed the opportunity to listen  to more Santo and Johnny.  I know I had listened to their version "Sleep Walk" several times I just never really dug into their other tunes.

                                                 "Flying in a Blue Dream"

"Summer Song"

"Satch Boogie"

Finally caught up!

R.I.P Jim Dunlop

Jim Dunlop might not be a household name. However you ever heard Jimi Hendrix use his Crybaby Wah pedal you can thank Jim Dunlop.

If you played a guitar or other string instrument requiring a pick you have probably used one of his picks.

The company makes guitar electronics, capos, picks and strings. The products endorsed by a who's who of musicians including Sash, Alice and Chains, ZZ Top, Dave Matthews, and Joe Bonamassa to new just a handful. Jim was an innovator and creator of things that made musicians better.

A quick interview with him..

His legacy lives on in the company he founded. He will be missed by his fans, friends and family.

The Yardbirds.... "Louise"

John Mayall's Bluesbreakers "Steppin'Out"

"Someone Like You"

A little time travel through some of his early projects. I tried to get some lesser known tracks in there. I wrapped it up with a few solo songs. Thanks for visiting and remember next month this blog is going to be busy.

A to Z Challenge: Weir and back to the Deadheads

I was blown away when I went to my first Grateful Dead concert 25 years ago this Summer. The adventure of me working my way to the front row, the Steve Miller Band opening up, the special guests (Bruce Hornsby), the lights, the music and the fans. It was a magical event that happened each summer until Jerry Garcia passed away. I went to Furthur, Phil Lesh & Friends, but they fell short. There were some other versions that might be pretty cool including the current Dead & Company.

We had our separation. Then I heard Bob Weir released an album of Cowboy based songs. My first musical experience was old cowboy songs on vinyl.

I was ready for an evening of escape. I made the drive. There was even a small collection of vendors in the parking lot. Not as cool as I remember for the old Stadium shows, but something. I missed vendors.

Image may contain: one or more people, people on stage, people playing musical instruments, concert and night

The opening with just Bob and his guitar for a few songs was more intimate than any stadium show. His band was good with a strong Americana vibe to it.

Below he performs a couple days later at Wanee covering Little Feat..

Another from Wanee with his touring band "Cassidy"

"Playin' in the Band" a week earlier in Austin..

Yes a member of the Grateful Dead, not quite the same as the old shows, but a touch of magic. Just enough to send me back home.

Happy Birthday Brad Paisley

Today we are going Country on this fine Rocktober day! I am  willing to invite Brad Paisley to the party. I was thinking about blogging about him since i read his book this month. Today being Brad's birthday just pushed me over the edge.

He is a "Celebrity" you know..

His book was a fun read "Diary of a Player." It was a unique twist to the music biography as Brad tips his hats to musical friends and influence who made him into the guitar player he is today.

Diary of a Player: How My Musical Heroes Made a Guitar Man Out of Me

Here is his latest single "Today"...

Brad and Keith Urban "Start a Band"...

A little guitar geek piece thrown in..

"Mud on the Tires"

Hope you enjoyed your visit! I'll be back soon with a new post!

Remembering Les Paul

Six years ago the legendary musician and guitar innovator Les Paul passed away. I became a fan of his due to his legendary guitar he designed for Gibson the Les Paul. Since my guitar hero in my formidable years was Jimmy Page and Slash was the guitarist of the popular rock band Guns N Roses.

Les Paul's music was different and beautiful in it's own right. However, it was far from the hard rock sounds I had associated the guitar with.

"Waiting for the Sunrise" here is a clip from the Les Paul and Mary Ford Show...

Yes in this tribute I am going to share a bit of music so I hope you enjoy.

Les Paul performing "Sleepwalk"

Les Paul and Stanley Jordan jamming out on a version of "Georgia"

Do you have a favorite Les Paul song or memory? Thoughts on the guitar? Feel free to share in the comments. Thanks for visiting and I will be back with a new post soon!
