Battle of the Bands: I Bid You Goodnight

It is a Sunday and a late at night. Sounds perfect for a traditional Bahamian gospel song. It was a song the Grateful Dead added into their repertoire decades ago. You know the drill, vote for the version you like best in the comments. I'm going to have three contenders this go around. I'll even the songs out by omitting the usual reference version.

Contender One: Aaron Neville

Contender Two: Nicolette Larson

Contender Three: Soweto Gospel Choir

I hope you enjoy this Battle of the Bands. I will post the results  in another post and I will have another Battle on the 15th. I am sure I will post a few on the days in between. Until next time I bid you goodnight.

I'm back for my ninth installment of Battle of the Bands. Here is how it works:

The battles take place on the first and 15th and winners will be announced on the 7th and 21st. I will normally post the winner in the comments. Of course have fun and enjoy!

If you are still looking for more musical fun after you vote, you can check out these sites for more battles:

When I first heard this song, heartbroken wondering the wine country of California and then boom! Over the airwaves of what had to be one of the coolest public radio station came Widespread Panics "Hope in a Hopeless World." It became one of my favorite songs and the perfect song for me at the time.

Phil Roy- Original Artist Not in Battle

Phil Roy originally wrote the song and here he performs his masterpiece..

First Challenger Eric Bibb

Second Challenger Widespread Panic

Enjoy the battle. This time I have two studio versions against each other. Vote in the comments and enjoy! Sorry a bit late in the day. I didn't have to work today and my daughter dragged me out to an event she wanted to go to and got out of the house, unplugged, and enjoyed the sunshine with a book.

R.I.P. Doc Watson

Sorry for the break in posts, I went on an unplanned vacation but I am back now! Unfortunately deaths don't take a vacation. The legendary guitarist Doc Watson passed away at 89. It has been a rough year for makers of Old Time music and Doc is a fine example of one of the best going away.

Don't take my word for it he won eight Grammy Awards including a Lifetime Achievement award. I read somewhere Chet Atkins had a likeness of Doc in his home somewhere. That is some high praise.

Watson is best know as a guitarist, one of the best flat pickers ever and he could finger pick too! He also played Harmonica and Banjo simply put he could play multiple instruments. His music skipped genres from bluegrass, to gospel, country, folk, and blues. Yes I know some of those are easy to cross but their is no doubt  Doc was a versatile musician.

Deep River Blues from Youtube...

A member of the Bluegrass Hall of Honor, several honorary degrees, a National Honor of the Arts, A lifetime achievement Award from the Recording Academy highlight some of his awards and honors along with the fore mentioned Grammy Awards. He certainly achieved a lifetime of musical awards and left us quite a legacy. He will be missed.

Two Greats we lost this year may they play in the concert hall in the sky..

Solomon Burke Passed away at the Age of 70

Solomon Burke passed away at the age of 70. You might not know his name but you know his songs. His best known song is "Cry to Me." You may know his song "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love." It was covered by The Rolling Stones, Wilson Pickett, and made famous by the Blues Brothers. The people who covered him speak volumes of his influence. He is still being covered today by artists such as Duffy.

Gospel and Soul, Solomon could song them both. A powerful voice. He was also a preacher since the age of seven. One way or another he touched a lot of people in his seventy years. Thankfully he left us his recordings and you can watch him on Youtube. It is away for the songs to live on and one to catch up on what they may have missed.
