Monday's Music Moves Me: Hurricane Songs

Today's theme on Monday's Music Moves Me is a freebie and I am going to go with a Hurricane Theme.  Just to fill everyone my area was hit by a category two hurricane. I rode the storm out. The flooding was quick to recede at my house and the storm left plenty to clean up in the yard. I am blessed the house wasn't damaged or my truck. I just got power back yesterday after five days.

Neil Young "Like a Hurricane"

Bob Dylan "Hurricane"

Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney  "Trying to Reason with Hurricane Season"

Anyway it is nice to have power and to be blogging again!

Happy Birthday Neil Young

Neil Young's birthday is today! Choosing songs to celebrate should be due to the 74 year old's variety of music!

Buffalo Springfield

"Mr. Soul"

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young "Southern Man"

Battle of the Bands Result: Counting votes like 1, 2, 3

One

It looked like I was going to have a tie and a shutout for a while. The shutout ended with the last vote so Aaron Neville finally had a vote.

Two

The Soweto Gospel Choir sounded great and they took an early two nothing lead. However, that was the only votes they received.

Three

Nicolette Larson was victorious capturing three votes.

The Celebration

"Lotta Love" was Larson's hit. This duet was her biggest Country hit..

I'll leave you with "Let Me Go, Love"

I'll be back later today with my newest battle!

Battle of the Bands: From shutouts to nailbiters

Well my streak of shutouts ended on this last round of Battle of the Bands. Every vote counted and this battle was decided by the last vote. Elton John edged out Neil Young 4 to 3. The song was John Lennon's "Imagine."

Celebrating Elton's big win with "I'm Still Standing"

Continuing the party with "Rocket Man"

                                                 "Tiny Dancer"

I wonder what my battle will be tomorrow?

Happy Birthday Neil Young!

This is the third year in a row I have celebrated Neil Young's birthday. Though the thought is the same I try to mix up the songs. An artist like Neil Young makes it easy since he has done so many songs in diverse styles. If you want more music I recommend visiting my old posts from last year and 2013.

I wouldn't be celebrating his birthday if I didn't share music. So let's start the celebration.

"Like A Hurricane"..

"Harvest Moon" is always nice for Fall...

"Everybody Knows this is Nowhere"..

What is your favorite Neil Young album? Song? Memory? Feel free to share in the comments.

Happy Birthday Neil Young!

Busy times for Neil Young personally and musically. I don't judge to much on this blog. His former band mates same to judge a bit more. It is safe to say Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young aren't getting together anytime soon to jam.

Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young..."Ohio"

Today is Neil Young's birthday is today and we celebrate it with music! Here is his latest song "Who is Gonna Stand Up"...

From now to way back with Buffalo Springfield performing with "Mr. Soul"..

Here he performs a vintage version of "Old Man"

To contrast here is something plugged in with Crazy Horse called "Like a Hurricane"

With Neil Young we could go on with songs heavy and light. Happy Birthday and thanks for the songs!

Here is a classic tune "Old Man" performed by Neil alone...

I can;t forget Crazy Horse, here Neil Young and Crazy Horse blow through "Like A Hurricane"

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan turns 72 today. How do you honor a man who has been covered, written many classic songs, has his own satalite radio show?

Reunite Guns and Roses to play this..

Well that's not going to happen. Make him cringe with Miley Cyrus covering him...

Here is John Mayer covering "Don't Think Twice"

Yes, I am having fun selecting some covers but I want to make sure they are different from other Bob covers I have included in past posts. Plus with artists like John and Miley is shows he is still touching younger generations of musicians and his legacy grows.Below is the man himself singing Happy Brthday and performing "Like A Rolling Stone" with Tom Petty's Heartbreakers...

Here Neil Young covers Blowin in the Wind...

and here is Norah Jones

Happy Birthday Bob Dylan! I hope everyone enjoys the music and I will be back soon with a new post

R.I.P Bert Jansch

I discovered Bert Jansch much the same way I discovered the blues. Through continued exploration of music where Led Zeppelin had left off. Through that band and others opening the doors I was able to discover and explore and develop my own taste. Bert wasn't blues but then again Zeppelin was not just blues based rocked. Jimmy Page "pinched" some of Bert's arrangements and made them his own. Bert Jansch was one of the acoustic, folk influences that was present in the band. Here is a prime example of that influence with Zeppelin:

Bert influenced many more than just Jimmy Page. The list includes Neil Young and Oasis to name a couple.
Rolling Stone Magazine named him one of 100 influential guitarists of all time. In a Washington Post obituary Neil young called him "as much of a great guitar player as Jimi Hendrix was."Below is a song that Neil confessed he copped a lot and was a lot of Bert in this song.

The song it was influenced by:

For more I would recommend the Washington Post obituary here.

I will add some more Bert down on my blog where I have something from you tube.
In the meantime here is some more Bert:

Can Music Change The World?

Neil Young said somewhere lately that music can't change the world and that time has passed. I disagree with Neil Young. However, I think it is harder now for musicians to speak out. You speak out now and the public might not hear from you for a while. Dixie Chicks come to mind.
One day they are on top of the Country world and the next day their careers are in a nose dive.

I think music can and does change the world. The save our planet concert same to have an impact. Music festivals have often raised money for charities. Special albums have been made to support special causes.

Changes aren't always made though. The Tibetan Freedom Festivals, they raised awareness and money. Still today China occupies Tibet. Eric Clapton has had some successful Crossroads Festivals. Funding his tropical rehab center. Which is fine. It's just a charity I'm not going to jump on the bandwagon for, since I'm not a wealthy, drug addict. If it was supporting a rehab center for folks who might not be able to afford it, well then why not support it. But who knows, maybe it will help some rising star to turn their life around and change the world. I'm for it, if it can do that.

The thing is musicians can draw in the crowds and raise money and awareness. They can still change the world. It's just one small step at a time.
