R.I.P Kris Kristofferson

Kris Kristofferson passed away leaving Willie Nelson as the last remaining Highwayman.

It was a "Sunday Morning Coming Down"

Above is a classic trailer of the 1981 film "Rollover" not only was Kris a singer/songwriter but he had an acting career. His roles in The Blade Trilogy stand out to me. However, I did get to see him in concert opening up for Bob Dylan.

He wrote "Me and Bobby McGee" which was made famous by Janis Joplin.

He had a successful life and career. At 88 he lived a full life, but he will be missed by his friends, colleagues and fans.

"Why Me Lord"

Today is a very beautiful but Summery day where I am at. The music of Janis Joplin fits very well with beautiful, sunshine filled days for some reason. Maybe that is just me. Anyway 49 years ago the singer was found dead in a hotel. I am typing this out on my phone so I apologize in advance for typos and formatting issues.

                 "Kosmic Blues"

"Piece of My Heart"

Just sharing a couple of songs. If you would like to make this post a little more interactive feel free to keave your Janis memories or favorite songs in the comments.

Happy Birthday Kris Kristofferson

Today June 22, 2015 is Kris Kristofferson's birthday. He was just featured in a blog by a friend of mind called the Far Away Series in a Battle of the Band. He lost that match up with Johnny Cash.

But Johnny Cash and Kris have had some collaborations outside of a Battle of the Bands.

Yes I added Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings because you can never have too many superstars.

I really discovered Kris Kristofferson when I saw him open up for Bob Dylan, But the first time I remember hearing a song he wrote was through Janis Joplin..

"Me and Bobby McGee" was a song Kris wrote. He also dabbled in acting as well..

The above clip was from Blade. My favorite Kris Kristofferson song is "Sunday Morning Coming Down"

Thanks for visiting! What is your favorite Kris Kristofferson song? Movie part?

Janis Joplin Headed to Broadway

No not the real Janis Joplin who died in 1970. However, her music and spirit has beeen revived in a musical I reviewed last year called One Night With Janis Joplin. The show is set to open this fall at Broadway's Lyceum Theatre you can read more details here.

The real Janis Joplin...

You can read my review from last year here. I really enjoyed the show and gaveit five stars. It returned for another run this summer and here is what Max Johnson thought of the show. Here is a preview for the shows return to Arena Stage...

Here is a little taste...

My editor Joel Markowitz interviewed the star, Mary Bridget Davis  and you can read it here. Well I hope you enjoy and I will be back soon with a new post!

One Night with Janis Joplin Revisted

Yes I have already blogged about One Night with Janis Joplin which is an incredible show taking place at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. You can read my review here, if you are near D.C. catch the show if not keep an eye out for this one.

Why am I blogging about it again? Well it was that good but the reason I am blogging about it again is due to my editor and friend Joel Markowitz had the opportunity to interview Mary Bridget Davies who pays Janis. He did an awesome job and I wanted to share his interview.

Here is a treat Mary with her own band...

.
If you want to find out more about this talented singer check out her website! Here is the real Janis at Woodstock to help you through your day..

One Night with Janis Joplin

There is a theater production called One Night with Janis Joplin staring an incredible singer Mary Bridget Davies. It made its world premiere last year at the Portland Center Stage in Oregon and had a successful run at the Cleveland Playhouse. Now it is playing at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. You can read my review here.

Sometimes I blog about death notices, birthdays, and significant dates in music history on here from time to time. However, I did not realize 42 years from the date I went to the show October 4, 1970 Janis Joplin died. It was a weird coincidence.

The singer Mary Bridget Davies is the real deal she has toured with Big Brother and the Holding Company which was Janis Joplin's old band. It was a great show and if you are in D.C. and you like classic rock, blues, and/or Janis Joplin catch the show. If you are not in Washington keep an eye out for the show.

Here is a trailer for the show...

Here she is performing with Big Brother and the Holding Company...

and I will add in the real thing as well...

Amy Winehouse R.I.P.

Curt Cobain I think perhaps wanted to join the 27 club, Amy Winehouse I don't think she really wanted to join it. Amy had her demons she was battling, I think in the end her demons won. In the end, we have lost a talented singer.

It isn't an opinion that she was a talented singer. Her debut album won 5 Grammy Awards, there has to be talent in order to pull off that feat. Perhaps one day we will be lucky to hear the album she was working on. Like so many artists who have died to young we will never know what her talent and creativity would have brought if she lived a longer life.

I love the blues and guitar music I often think what would have happened if Jimi Hendrix would have lived longer. Could you imagine the songs Janis Joplin would have sang? The lyrics Jim Morrison would have composed? We could go right down the list of the 27 club and ask questions. Now we ask questions about Amy Winehouse.

Here is Amy performing her hit song Rehab:

Here is some other coverage of her death:

Amy Winehouse may your demons now leave you alone and may you rest in peace. Thank you for the songs that we can still listen too.
