Haikus on Autumn, Small Town Hurricanes, and Friday the 13th

Gulf Coast Autumn Haiku

Humidity up

Storms from the tropics bring down

Temperatures slow

Small Town Hurricane

Recover slowly

The masses careless not them

Storm beats up small town

Friday the 13th from the Down

Friday the thirteenth

Not unlucky when your down

Superstitions none

R.I.P Christopher Lee

Actor Christopher Lee has passed away at the age of 93.

Lots of us remember him from his modern roles in The Lord of The Rings movies but Mr. Lee appeared in over 2090 movies. Below is a clip from Dracula from 1958...

Here is a clip from The Fellowship of the Ring..

What was your favorite movie Christopher Lee was in? Favorite scene or memory? Feel free to share in the comments.

Christopher Lee was also into music. Here is a video of one of his songs...

Perhaps you would just enjoy him reading Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven..

Sir Christopher Lee will be missed but his legacy will live on his films.

Memorial Day Poem: Remember them on Memorial Day

They had a poetry contest at work for Memorial Day, I didn't win but that is okay since I can share it here.

Remember them on Memorial Day

They answered Uncle Sam’s call
Remember them on Memorial Day
For you and I they gave their all
So we can enjoy the American Way

Enjoy the cookouts with your family
Remember them on Memorial Day
Enjoy the swimming pool and the apple pie
Raise a toast for the ones not here today

Enjoy the company of loved ones
Remember them on Memorial Day
That is what they missed all alone
Place a flower where they lay

I hope everyone enjoys their Memorial Day weekend. I hope at some point you will remember those who gave all.

Thanks for visiting and I will be back soon!

A to Z Challenge: Looming a dark haiku

Photo by Michael M Koehler Photography

Poetry is where writing really began for me. As we continue on the A to Z: Challenge I thought I would write a new haiku style poem called "Looming."Nice change of pace to add in some creative writing as the challenge moves forward. I hope you enjoy my dark haiku..

Looming in the dark
In the distance far away
Growing as it comes

Where did your writing start? Do you ever return to that writing place? Thoughts on the small poem?
Feel free to share in the comments. Tune in tomorrow as I will have a combined Battle of the Bands post and A to Z Challenge post.

World Ocean Day: Poetry to Celebrate

Today was World Ocean Day. As a fisherman, beach lover, traveler, it is no secret how much I love the ocean.

Here is a poem I wrote a couple of years ago about the ocean, I hope you enjoy.

Here is the Atlantic Ocean...

Here is a tanka about the sea I wrote about a year ago about the sea and a sailor. There are characters of real and characters of folklore in the sea. This one is about The Siren.

This poem tells of the oceans rejuvenating power. Here is another tanka about how mankind falls short in caring for the ocean.

Remember the oceans and come back soon!

A to Z Challenge: National Poetry Month

Poetry is where my writing really began. I have gone back to it writing more. Perhaps full circle but it is different now. Plus I still explore other writing avenues. Anyway this month is National Poetry Month and I haven't embraced it.

The last poem I read...

I haven't shared someone elses work in a while. The last poem I read was by Bill Williams III on Yahoo! Voices  it is called "Friday at the Office." I enjoyed it and thought Bill caught the balancing act between work and family perfectly. I know I struggle with that balancing act!

Poems for Easter:

Senryu:

Easter treasures and lost meanings My mind finds the same theme on this one as the about Easter one.

The empty tomb  I really liked this one.

Celebrating the return

Senryu about Easter

Senryu about Passover

I tend to write more Senryu and haikus. Short, flowing like this post. I will be back on Saturday with a new post for the challenge. In the meantime I might write a poem or two to celebrate the Poetry month.

Spring Poetry

Thought I would search through some of my published poetry that I have done on the subject of Spring.

This one is a full open verse poem on Spring I hope you enjoy. Also on Yahoo Contributor Network here is a haiku called Sunshine's Warm Kiss. I even did a haiku about March Madness.

On Helium I published a poem called A Soft Spring Rain. I wrote this one about a year ago.Sometimes I experiment with styles here is a Tanka called Spring Wildflowers. Yet another free verse poem called Spring has Sprung. Here is a rather recent haiku I published called Groundhog's Early Spring. Haiku writing sames to be a place I find myself recently. I like how quick they can be created, how they often just role out onto the screen.

I know I share a lot of my other articles, but I don't share my poetry as often. It is important to me since it is where I started as a writer.

Poetry Update

I had not posted anything on my poetry since September 4, 2011. Then again I haven't written a lot of poetry since then. Well my latest is a haiku which was suppose to be about winter. As a skier I like snow, but sometimes it might be too much. You can read that here.

I've wrote more poetry this year than I have in quite a while. I have a bunch more that I wrote in my younger years but they were kind of private. Now that I am older I write more public. Everything changes and this one is about the season Fall. You can read that here.

Then I did a quick Haiku about a rabbit you can read that here Poetry: Haiku about rabbits - by Mike Spain - Helium. I guess it is silly Haiku night as I wrote one about beavers too. Poetry: Haiku about beavers - by Mike Spain - Helium.

And since my anniversary just past let me leave with http://www.helium.com/items/2006058-villanelle-about-marriage. It is a stab at a poem in the villanelle style on marriage.I wrote this one a year ago so I am digging up something a little older.

My Poetry

I hadn't realized I haven't pimped out my poetry on this blog since May. I have written a few since then.

I did a Father's Day poem which I got creative on form it is an acrostic formed by three haikus and an extra line. Since my dad has gone through a lot since I wrote it, it is still meaningful. He has gone through my Mom's battle with cancer(she won) and he had pretty serious open heart surgery. You can read the poem here.

Then I wrote a couple of Haikus. The first one is called The Siren. I also wrote one about hurricane Irene. I know Irene didn't do anything major around me, but I do understand other folks did not have it so lucky.

Well that catches everyone up on my poetry. I should have a busy month..with football and I am covering a few more plays this month as well. Stay tuned for more...

Z to A: Poetry

In the A to Z Challenge I used poetry for P as well. I am still at it, I have some new poems I have published since the last challenge. I think they are getting better.

Old River , just to make clear I didn't redo song lyrics written by someone elese, I  just wrote a poem on the same river.

How Do You Keep The Flame Alive? It has been a sad month for some of my friends. One friend's wife died of cancer and one friend's mom died on Mother's Day. So, death was on my mind and the thoughts of keeping the flame of someone specials love after they die alive was the subject matter.

If you like my poetry I have signed up to write a couple more soon. If you don't like them, well at least I warned you.

A to Z: Poetry

I was not aware that April was National Poetry Month. Between traveling and getting backlogged in my writing, I have been creating  some poetry this month. I enjoy poetry. It is were I got the writing bug. Here is what I have been up to:

Mothers Love, is an acrostic poem for an assignment for Mothers Day. I thought about my own mother who has been having a tough time mending after battling cancer. I also thought of my wife the mother of my pride and joy daughter and a pretty cool son.

The Battle of Writing More, it is my stab at a Shakespearean Sonnet. I had some things in my head that suck in my mind about writing lately and this is what came out. That is what poetry was for me when I used to write a lot of it. Emotions, feelings, coming out thats what I used to fill notebooks with, but now I am sharing some with more than a handful of folks.

Here is another sonnet I wrote about anger. I wrote a poem on going fast, I used my hobby of ski racing and growing older for the subject matter. I  also wrote some haiku, they can be found on helium.

Creative Writing

Well I have eluded about writing more poetry as of late. I ti s true I have published about a half dozen or so on helium. Well I have earned a Bronze Creative Writing Badge on Helium with it so far. I am trying to compete in a writing contest, I have moved up to a high of #15 and I have fallen back into the 20's I need to be in the top three to win any money. We will see what happens.

It breaks down to two  acrostics, three sonnets, and three haiku. There are 20 titles in  the contest, so I guess I need to write 12 more. the contest ends on the 9th and results will be on the 24th. It is nice to write poetry again, after all poetry is where I started in writing. However, as I have aged I have written less and less of it. As my writing has concentrated on other things.
