Battle of the Bands: Summer Wind

From Gypsy Jazz to jazz standards as May has faded into June. The song Summer Wind was penned by Heinz Meier and Hans Bradtke. The lyrics were German, so Johnny Mercer added English lyrics and Wayne Newton recorded the first English version.

Let's make this fun with the contenders!

Contender One: Frank Sinatra

Contender Two: Willie Nelson

So Frank versus Willie, tell me who you like!

  1. I started out thinking that no one could beat Frank, then realized that Willie did a great version with a solo by him and harmonica backing him. So my vote goes to Willie.

  2. MIKE ~

I was seriously starting to worry about you, my friend. You've been MIA for awhile now. In fact, earlier today, while praying before my meditation session, I said a prayer to God about your welfare. And, LOOK! HERE you are now!! (You're welcome. I'm grateful that I could bring you back from the dead. ;-)

OK, generally, I definitely prefer Willie to Frank. But...
on this song? Nah. Sorry. Frank owns this one. This is actually one of my very favorite recordings by Frank Sinatra (and his mobster pals).

  3. I have to say Willue puts a lot more feeling into the words than Frankie so Willie gets my vote

  4. Willie's version is fine, but Sinatra owns this one as far as I'm concerned.

    It's Frank Sinatra for me!

  6. Willie's rendition is a lilting one. Stands a class apart, so I say.
