Battle of the Bands: Fortune Teller

One of the greatest songwriters in New Orleans and perhaps the World passed away recently. I paid tribute to him with this post. His songs offer so many choices so I will narrow it down to one.

The rules are simple I pick a song and present a couple of bands battling it out with the song. You pick the one you like best by casting your vote in the comments. The why's and other comments are always welcomed.

Please check out the other battles:

Today's song "Fortune Teller"

Contender One: Robert Plant and Alison Krauss

Contender Two: The Rolling Stones

Short and sweet today. One great song writer. One of the greatest Rock and Roll bands, one of the greatest voices in Rock and the awesome voice of Alison Krauss. I hope you enjoy! It is all up to you, just vote in the comments for the one you like the best! I went to the Fortune Teller and she told me the winner is...stay tuned!

Hi, Mike! Happy BOTB day to you, good buddy! I noticed your post the other day honoring the late great Allen Toussaint. I am familiar with the song "Fortune Teller" and have the Rolling Stones' version in my personal collection. I also have a version performed by The Hardtimes on a rare DVD episode of Where The Action Is:

In this contest today I am giving the nod to Robert Plant. Plant's version has a slower tempo which adds to the drama. The echo drenched production adds a spooky, mysterious touch. To top it off the track ends with a wailing guitar workout. There's a lot more to like on the Plant version and he gets my vote.

Thanks, Mike!

Ghads Mike, you almost stacked the vote just by mention Alison Krauss. I don't think she can be voted against. EVER.

Luckily she did not have any words to sing in this, but her voice lent such a haunting melody to the gypsy vibe of the drums. And i gotta say, I loved Robert Plant's voice for this. The Stones were awesome, as usual; but the combination of Robert's deep voice, Alison's haunting support, and those drums nails this song.

Awesome battle.

I really enjoyed listening to Robert Plant and Alison Karauss's version. It seemed more polished in style and I like the slow suspense if I can word it like that. I enjoyed the Rolling Stones but Plant and Krauss did it for me. So much so that I want the CD! I forgot about a song they did when their CD came out and I enjoyed it. Thanks for reminding me

Stones have that classic early English Beat sound, but the Plant/Krauss version actually sounds good with a cool New Orleans voodoo vibe--definitely more innovative than the Stones.

I vote for Robert Plant/ Allison Krauss (though I didn't notice much of Allison)-- more music going on in that take.

Howdy, MIKE! ~
Good song choice. I wish I could break up this shutout for ya, but it would be dishonest of me.

Yeah, I gotta run with the pack on this one and vote PLANT & KRAUSS. As others have said, it's just more musically interesting. The Rolling Stones are all about that stripped-down jangly British Invasion sound which, truthfully, does not appeal to me, and it never really did much.

However, I did not care for that incessant synthesizer(?) sound in the left channel that played non-stop through the speaker during the PLANT/KRAUSS recording. I found it rather distracting. A little bit of it would have been OK, but it just kept going on and bothered me a bit. I would have liked their version so much more without that unnecessary beat.

Good song though. I hope someone will come along and break up the shutout. But Donna's already come and gone, and she's a shutout wrecker. Maybe Janie Junebug can do it. I think she sometimes hears the Battles from the opposite way the votes are falling.

I love the Stones and will usually go that route but...but...but...it's ROBERT PLANT! It's ALISON KRAUSE!! One simply can't expect a weak soul like moi to be able to fight that powerhouse of a pairing...and I'd love to be the one to break up the shut out, too.

Can't help it. Plant and Krause, baby.

I love the Rolling Stones but in this battle, I am definitely choosing Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. I didn't really notice Alison all that much though, except for the ahhhh, ahhhh's. Would've loved to hear more of her voice. Will have to check her out on YouTube.
Good song!

Rolling Stones for me. I've always been a big fan of them, and Robert Plant, not so much. Quite an interesting song.

I really loved Alison Krauss' sort of singing. Lended well to the song so I'm giving it to her and Robert Plant!

Whoa—GREAT battle! I love Allan Toussaint! After two listen-throughs, I'm going with the Plant/Krauss combo... Their sort of psychedelic feel worked very well for me with this song. Don't get me wrong, the Stones version is excellent... But Rober and Alison just do it better (for me) :)

LOVED this battle!

Bummer! I'd love to vote for Allen Toussaint.... not happening, I know. I've never been a Stones' fan so Plant and Krauss get my vote. Thanks, Mike.

I'm giving it to the Rolling Stones. It's the kind of song that calls for a British blues-rock treatment.

Hey, Mike! This song is new-to-me. I'm not a Rolling Stones fan, but I really liked their cover of this song the best. So give my vote to the Stones.

Funny thing... I love Alison Krauss. I've heard a few of the songs from this album and really like the pairing. Then I heard this one and my Alison was nigh well non-existent. I detected her lovely vocals in the background "aahhing," but was quite disappointed. I thought to myself, "I can't believe I'm voting against Alison Krauss here." But, then I listened to the Stones and liked it even less. Whew.

So, while I think Robert Plant could've made better use of Alison's talents on this one, a little is better than nothing. And they get my vote. Plant & Krauss.

This is a tough one for me. I like The Stones version. Somehow their 'garage band' sound seems appropriate here. I'm not a big fan of Alison Krauss, but then she's barely there in the Robert Plant version. What to do...what to do...what to do? I'm gonna have to cave and give my vote to Robert Plant and the tiny little hum of Alison Krauss, even I know musically it's more interesting, even though I still like the version by The Stones.

Good BATTLE. I had thought about using a Toussaint song this go around and then I realized about the FACE OFF at McCarthy's site and decided to take a break. I think I'll save mine for January.
