Bluegrass legend and the songwriter of "Panama Red" with yours truly..

I was going to go jazz with a good guitar showdown but I through it out the window at the last minute. I decided to continue where I left off on my last Battle of the Band. The picture may indicate bluegrass. However, I think this selection more fits in psychedelic, country rock of the early 70's. I haven't heard the song in years so I am dusting it off for the Battle of the Bands.

Lyrics from nrpsmusic,com:

PANAMA RED

(PETER ROWAN)
CHORUS
PANAMA RED, PANAMA RED
HE'LL STEAL YOUR WOMAN, THEN HE'LL ROB YOUR HEAD
PANAMA RED, PANAMA RED
ON HIS WHITE HORSE, MESCALITO
HE COME BREEZIN' THROUGH TOWN
I'LL BET YOUR WOMAN'S UP IN BED WITH
PANAMA RED
THE JUDGE DON'T KNOW WHEN RED'S IN TOWN
HE KEEPS WELL HIDDEN UNDERGROUND
BUT EVERYBODY'S ACTING LAZY
FALLING OUT AND HANGIN' 'ROUND
MY WOMAN SAID, "HEY PEDRO
YOU'RE ACTIN' CRAZY LIKE A CLOWN"
NOBODY FEELS LIKE WORKING
PANAMA RED IS BACK IN TOWN
CHORUS
EVERYBODY'S LOOKING OUT FOR HIM
'CAUSE THEY KNOW RED'S SATISFIES
LITTLE GIRLS LOVE TO LISTEN TO HIM
SING AND TELL SWEET LIES
BUT WHEN THINGS GET TOO CONFUSING, HONEY
YOU'RE BETTER OFF IN BED
AND I'LL BE SEARCHING ALL THE JOINTS IN TOWN FOR
PANAMA RED
CHORUS

Warning labels: Adding lyrics kind of like warning labels. Some videos may also have drug references. I did say psychedelic early 70s music and Panama Red was a strain of marijuana as well.

Contestant One: The Original version (kind of) The New Riders of the Purple Sage

Contestant Two: Old and In The Way

This song was recorded about the same time but released two years later in 1975. Yes I am bringing back Jerry Garcia and David Grisman. Joining them is Peter Rowan, John Kahn, and Vassar Clements.

Changing it up slightly and narrowing it down to just two versions this go away. Vote for the version you like best. There are some great live version out there as well.

I will be back on the 22nd with the winner! Thanks for visiting and remember to vote in the comments!

Hi, Mike! You are lucky to have made the rounds of so many live shows and to have met so many great artists.

These are two evenly matched country rock performances. I liked the New Riders' tight harmony and backbeat rhythm, but my vote goes to Old and In The Way because those guys injected more life and fun into the song and I preferred the syncopated rhythm.

Thanks for another great BOTB, Mike. I'll be back on the 22nd to find out who won.

Great photo, Mike! It must have been a thrill to meet one of your favourites.
I vaguely remember this song, but it's been many years. New Riders gave it a real country vibe, but I thought Jerry and friends sounded smoother. Please give my vote to "Old and In the Way". Love that name! ☺

Both of these were good (very enjoyable listening), but I liked the first one better: The New Riders of the Purple Sage.

I like the New Riders of the Purple Sage version better. Maybe it's because it's the one I'm more familiar with, but I just liked the overall sound of it over the other. I remember Panama Red...way back when...although it is more like a hazy memory... :)
Good battle Mike.

Have to go with New Riders - for the memories; I learned to country swing!

Old and In The Way takes me vote. Just something authentic and twangy about it I like. Dunno! :)

I like the Old and In The Way better. They seem to be having fun and I like the instruments (Is that a banjo??). I feel stupid not knowing what that instrument is. Anyway that sold it for me

I almost hate to admit it, but I LOVE this song. Reminds me of the old days in Breckenridge. I had a huge Golden Retriever names Panama Red or Panama for short. I gave a fair listen to Old and In The Way, but it was gonna take quite a bit to sway my vote from The New Riders. Their version is the one I'm most familiar with and I love their overall sound.

In case that wasn't clear and whole heated, hands down vote for The New Riders of the Purple Sage.

Love the photo!! So cool to meet the artists in person. very cool!
I do like both versions of the song but my vote goes to The New Riders.
Great battles!

I love these battles of songs I've never heard before! It's so much easier to be objective -- and it makes me examine my selection process, too. It's amazing how often I find myself selecting the music I listen to by the name of the artist / compilation curator rather than by actual musical worth. So... being a new, and objective, listener here, thinking about which of these two songs would be most likely to find its way into my iPod, I'm going with New Riders. I enjoyed the Old and In The Way version, but it felt like something that would tire me out pretty quick. Whereas NR felt like music I could listen to regularly. (I know, I'm not adding much value here, haha.)

Great battle!

Never cared for this song. I'd rather have the Panama Red strain to strain my brain than strain my listening organs listening to this song. Both versions here are done well. I'm only familiar with the version by NRPS and it sounds better than I remember. The other more bluegrass trad version is fine but nothing I'd keep going back to listen to.

I'll vote for the New Riders on this Battle. Glad you kept it to just two versions.

songs well done and this is a tough choice. I'm not familiar with either version, so I don't have familiarity to sway me. I'm going to have to go with Old and In the Way, as they stood out just a smidge more. Great battle!

I had no idea that you wear a Stetson and drink bottled water!

Ahhh, this one's easy.

NEW RIDERS, fo' sho'!

'Old And In The Way' just sounded... old and in the way... and they sounded like they were recording in some 17-year-old high school dropout's basement.

Professional music oughta sound professional, even if it IS a song about "Mary Jane And Her Last Dance". (Next time, boys, smoke less and shell out a little of your weed money for some studio time.)

Not exactly my genre of music, but I gave both a listen to anyway. ;)
Please give my vote to the New Riders.

Three words: pedal steel guitar. Give my vote to NRPS.
